Does anybody know how possible if at all it is to get a location in your home city? I am from San Antonio and would like to stay around here if possible but I also wouldn't mind Dallas, Austin.

Also about how long is the process and how hard is the written test?

Any responses are welcommed

Well, usually you'll go to the academy, and then spent about 2 yrs at a west Texas post. But the rule of thumb is most troopers are at the duty station they want to be at within 2-3yrs, not all that bad, and it's a great department to be in. So you're from San Antonio huh? Are you attending school or an academy? What made you consider the DPS? I'm just outside of San Antonio, and would just like to know others motivations...

As for the test, it's pretty easy, just stay calm! Most people mess up because they get nervous when they get down there, and forget the most basic stuff! Remain calm, and go get a TASP study book(or something like that) and study a little if you feel rusty on anything(math, vocab, science etc...).

Hope this helps...

I'm currently a Felony Probation Officer. I have a B.A. Degree in CJ and I have worked in the Bexar County Sheriff's Department in 1995. I have always thought that being a trooper would a great job, but I have put it off. Now its time to quit putting it off and at least try to get in or I will never know.

So the test has math. Math is my favorite subject!!!(NOT!!!).

So are you a trooper? Have you taken the test or gone through the process?

Stay safe.

That's a great background for getting in!
No, I am just now in the police academy in San Antonio, however one of my friends is in the final phase of the process for the next academy, and from what he's said, it's not very hard to test, just make sure you're up to par on basic math and maybe pre algebra, reading comprehension, spelling and vocabulary, and you'll do great. Also worth noting, they are extremly short on applicants(especially females) so you may have a great chance of getting on. How far have you taken your desire to become DPS? Have you called a recruiter? Applied? If not, get started today.

Be Safe,

NR

As far as getting started, I have downloaded the application and will fill it out tonight. I have all the other documents except my highschool transcript which I will get this Wed and then turn in my application also this Wed. The great thing about my current job is that I have Wed off and only work 4 days a week.

Well I'm off to court right now to testify and try to send one of my defendants to prison for screwing up.

stay safe and if you have any other info please post it.

Justa rookie,

So how is the SAPD academy so far? I have some friends that are in the SAPD and so far they love it. If you have any questions I will try to answer them or find the answers.

Anyways good luck and have fun in the academy.

P.S. My friend that went through the academy was able to keep the video tape of himself during the boxing portion of the academy. Good stuff to watch, but please try to not get your A$% kicked because many people will see the footage. Just food for thought.

I am actually on my way to the oral interview board today in about an hour. When I get back I will let you know about the process further and keep you posted on my progress.
