Well after consultation with my fellow wanna be IOI's it is time to start a new thread. We are all hopeless waiting for word about the next class at FLETC.
We welcome anyone that just applied. We are hoping the since it has been posted again that we are in good shape.
If anyone can give more information we would appreciate it. If we can give any, we will. ;) :o
From the sounds of things, it looks like my BI is nearly complete. It was stamped priority just as like a few others who are waiting with me. Any advice or insight from current or past IOIs would be welcome.
Gibbarn, where are you? :o
what is IOI? I though I had the acronyms fown, but IOI was not in the acronym thread. what gives?

I agree...I thought I had the whole, "alphabet soup" thing down cold, but what the heck is an IOI?

Unless I'm mistaken, I believe that IOI refers to the ATF Industry Operations Investigator positions.
This is the new ATF Industry Operations Investigator thread. (IOI)

3T, Simon, Science, Tex.....Stand by for PM.
Does anyone hear any hooping and hollaring coming from Middle Tennessee? :D :D
Congrats, buddy! Sent you a PM.
I came across this website and thought I would share my exp. I also have about the same time line as most of you. I moved right after I sent in all my BI info. Just last week my BI called and said that he needed to do a interview at my new home. I have not heard from anyone after that. Also no contact was made with any of the people that I listed on my SF. I just had a background done by the FBI and I am hoping that the ATF will be able to use it being that they both are DOJ.
I was surprised to read how much info you all were able to gather from this process. I had no Idea when the FLETC classes were. Is anyone sure that June and August are the correct months?
Thanks for all the info! If I can be of any help let me know!

I can tell you for sure that there is a June class. I will be in it!!!!!! HOOO RAH!!!!! No more.... ;) Nothing but.... :D
I also wanted to share this bit of info for those of you like me who have not heard anything. When I had my interview it took place in the midwest. My panel told me, and this is only for those of you that applied for the 1st ann that closed in Nov 2004. Anyway the panel told me that the ATF was only interviewing 100 people nation wide. So if they have 48 in the June FLETC class and 48 in the August class then that leaves 4 people that will be waiting for the October class.
Hope this info helps! :)
Good for you Recon!!!!!

First of all congrats to Recon again. This is very good news hopefully for all of us. Anchor are you sure they were just interviewing 100 people or did they say there were 100 positions? Were you told that there would be an October class? I was told about the June and August class but I didn't hear anything about an October class.

That's right!!!!! If I make it to FLETC with you we can talk some good smack!!! We FINALLY got you guys last year!!!! Even though the Cards knocked us out, beating the Braves made my season!

They said that they were interviewing 100 people nation wide. They did not say how many positions. The class in October I was told they would have if the new budget allowed. I believe that if you background has been started by this point you will make it into the June or August class. Like others I work for the GOV and I have never heard of the process moving this fast!
Recon's news is great for all of us!
Hope that I helped TX22

Hey Recon
Did they call you? Or did you get a Fedex?
Anchor :o
I got the call today too. I will be in the June class
Anchor,
I also interviewed in the midwest. If I remember correctly, I was told in the interview there were 100 positions that needed to be filled by 300 applicants that were being interviewed around the country.
That being said, here's some fuel for the discussion fire. It would seem there is a large need for IOIs. Reasoning: 1) speed of recent hiring; 2) re-opening of both the 5/7 announcements and the 9 announcements; and 3) try doing a Google search on ATF IOIs and check out the report that was given last year to one of the House or Senate subcommittees. I won't get into details, but it seems to support the need of IOIs.
Just my .02. Good luck to everyone. I'm only about 2wks behind Recon, so I'll be doing a lot of running to the phone in the next few days.

I got a phone call. They asked to let them know if I wanted the position. DUH......I didn't have to return the call. I have to report to my FO two weeks before I report to FLETC.
I am still PUMPED!!!!!!
Good luck to everyone else. We'll have to have a party in Glynco for everyone on the list.

Man that's two of you with the call so far...you and fedster. When I told my wife about your good fortune...I have been beating her away from the phone everytime it rings... :D . I wonder if and when I will get a call since I was just a little behind in the process from you two....
Hello ATF.. ..I'm waiting :D
Have any of you called you local ATF offices and talked to any of the inspectors/ioi's to get their take on the current position, etc. I know many times in interviews, you get a slightly slanted versions of the job by mngt. Good luck to all at FLETC.
My interviewers were both IOIs for a combination of over 20 yrs. I specifically asked them if they liked their jobs and working for the ATF. The answer was a definitive "YES."
That's good enough for me.
I GOT THE CALL TOO... WOO HOO.. I'M GOING TOO. I'LL BE IN THE JUNE CLASSS...... YAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I CAN BARELY STAND IT!!!!!!!!!!! I CAN'T BREATHE!!!!!!!!!!!
okay.. just kidding... i didn't get the call, but i thought i'd practice anyways.....
Come on guys.. did they give you your location????? Or do you have to wait until you go through the training?????

Congrats!!!!! I am so HAPPY for both of you! I can only hope that I receive a call soon too. When they called you what info did they give you? What day does the June class start? Did they tell you your salary and location? Do you have to move to your new location before going to GA for training? Any and all info would be greatly appreciated.
I was only offered one location, it was one of my five preferences. I was given the option of two report dates, one was about 3 weeks prior to class and the other was about 1 week prior to class. I chose to report 1 week ahead of class because I am making a cross country move and could use the extra time. I will most likely stay in a hotel prior to FLETC. They offered the rest of the week and weekend to think it over, it wasnt needed I accepted on the spot. The class is the first week of June either the 6th or 8th I cant remmeber the exact date.
Good Luck to all

I was offered my first choice. The FO out of Nashville handles Tenn and Ala. I was told at the interview that they needed 10 or more IOI for the FO. The Sup. (sioic?) was one of the people that I interviewed with in Feb. Did I say the I was pumped.......anyway I was given a choice of report date of May 16th or May 31st. I chose May 16th. I only live about 10 miles from the FO. I have to be at FLETC on June 6-July 28th. Oh yeah did I say I was pumped.........Good Luck to everyone else.
About the salary.....we got those letters back in Jan. I will be a GS9.
Later, you notice it is after midnight......still pumped. :D

What would you do?
I am also in this group awaiting to hear. My BI is currently being worked on now, so I don't think I would make June class. I have three other pending jobs in the boiling pot. Two of which I wouldn't mind taking and would excel at if offered the position. The third job would the lesser of the two evils. I HATE my present job. I know that sounds rough, but I do.
If I would be offered one of these two jobs, would it be wrong of me to take it knowing i have a good shot at getting into one of these classes later in the year? And do you think it would be wrong if i quit one of those jobs when and if the ATF calls?
One of the positions is being created, and i would feel horrible leaving it, but at the same time, I don't know for sure the ATF is going to call me or even when, and i would hate to turn down a good job especially if they are willing to pay for an advanced degree and i can stay in my hometown.
What do you think?
Mystified,
Sounds like we're paddling the same boat towards the waterfall. I'm also in the process of at least two other fed positions other than the IOI job; one of which was my sole reason for subjecting myself to 3yrs of law school torture. ;) ;) ;)
I can't tell you what to do, but I will tell you to think of yourself first. Even if you later walk away from one position for another, the first job/agency will continue on w/out you. You may feel some guilt, but that's temporary. Do what's best for you and your family, if that applies. I'm sure there're plenty of threads that echo this advice.
As for me, I'll happily accept the first offer when and if it come (the IOI position is the current front-runner :D ). Hopes of the "dream job" won't put food on the table or gas in my car.
Good luck.

Does anyone have any idea how long it usually takes to fill up a training class? I am really curious because I am getting married on May 29, and currently have my honeymoon booked from May 30 - June 16. I still want to get into the June class, but I really need to know soon so I can change my current travel plan. If I do get into the June class I am going to go on my honeymoon and go before my wedding. I am thinking that if I dont hear anything by the end of next week I am probably not going to be in the June class. I hope to hear something soon!

Hang in there :) Try not to over think what you are reading and what is going on in the hiring process. They will call you! If I was in your shoes I would get married and go on my honeymoon! I know people that work with the GOV that have turned down there first duty station and have asked to be put in the next training class that comes open. In all cases those people have gotten a second call and were put into the next training class. And from the sounds of it you may be put in the August class anyways, it sounds like the people that are being put in the June class have already gotten the call!
Good luck! and Congrats on the Wedding! :D

Thanks for the advice. I called up today and found out that my background has not been cleared yet. I am pretty surprised because my background investigator completed the BI about a month ago. I am guessing that you are probably right about me missing the June class. It will actually work out ok if I get into the August class. Good luck to all....
I'm sort of in the same boat as you. I have pending travel plans at the end of May and not sure if I should still go, but my BI just started a week ago... so i doubt I'll get that call for June. I can't stop my life either... :D

Hey guys,
I've been reading your posts for a while now, I thought I would give my info.
I tested in Tenn. June 2004
Panel interview in Dallas Aug. 2004
Background Investigation started Dec 2004
Background Investigation Finished Dec 23 2004
Waiting....... ;)
During my interview I asked for locations in Dallas, OKC, San Diego and the other 2 locations I dont recall.
My BI paperwork was marked as Priority and was completed very quickly but in Aug. during the interview I requested that I be allowed to complete my current work contract and that I would be available to start in Aug 2005.
I am glad to hear that some of you are starting in June, I hope that I will see the rest of you in Aug.
Take care, It will be worth the wait.

Thats good to hear! Do you know when they will contact us for the Aug class? It looks as if the people who made the June class have about a month in the field office before FLETC. Do you have any info on when they may call people for the Aug class?
Thanks :)
Sorry Bro,
Im in the same boat as everyone else. I dont have any contacts in DC so I'm just playing the waiting game too.
I have called the number on the ATF website but they wont say a word. I find out more info from the people on this forum than from anywhere else. :(

Thanks....I bet that your BI should be done about now. Try calling the investigator and checking. I spoke to my investigator about 3 or 4 times after we met and he kept me up to date. Even told me when he transmitted the report to HQ.
I bet the training is a lot of books and in class....but I guess I won't find out until I go...unless Gibbarn mysteriously shows up again to fill us in :D .
Turner, I'm happy for you. I'm glad you got your first choice. I'm getting very anxious now since my bro from Texas just got hired. I hope I'll get the call soon. Maybe I'll get San Antonio if Houston is not open and we can work together. Keep me informed of what's going on. Talk to you later!!!!!!!!!!!

I will be still ;) while you all are at FLETC. Good luck! :p
Greetings All;
I have posted on the other IOI thread so I thought I would do the same here.
I was rated for GS-09 in Oct/04
Interviewed in Seattle in Jan/05
CO in Feb/05 and BI returned in 3 days
E-Mail Request clarification on BI in Mar/05
The waiting has begun!
By the way my locations were:
Ft Worth, Tx
Dallas, TX
San Antonio, Tx
Las Vegas, NV
Orlando, FL
Look on the bright side. Those of us who do not make the June class, at least we will have ppl before us that can give us updates on what to expect which will make it easier on all of us when we get "the call."

I already put my 2 weeks in and my boss was already saying that she does not want for me to quit....she actually told me that she was hoping that I would not get offered the job :o ......too bad ha! :D
Anyway...I'm just counting down the days now until 16 May :p
Good luck everyone.

Yeah that's true...who'd want to be considered a pain. I am starting to get anxious for everyone who is in the final leg and can see the finish line in the distance....I wonder if they are calling people one by one and adjudicating cases as they go along ....
I am waiting, my BI is talking to my friends and family in MI. I am hoping I get a call for the August class. It just works out better for everything I have going on this summer. I am just very worried about getting my 1st choice (GA) My husband is a 1811 and it would be very hard to make a move. Any word on how many IOI's they need across the nation?
Let me know if any of you get the call! Good luck!

No news to report. I've been swamped with trying to tie up all the lose ends before graduation, so I guess I've at least got some distraction to keep me from pacing the floors.

My time line is something like this:
Applied in Oct 04
Letter Nov 04
Interview 2/5/05
BI Packet 2/11/05
Sent back around 3 days later
Met with Investigator around mid march (Probably)
Still Waiting
That background check is thorough. They've talked to like 15 people that I know of, and some of those people, they've pumped for more names. It's intense I tell you. I've a good friend and former co worker that took the IOI job maybe 6 months ago. He says there's only 2 days at FLETC that are physical. I think he said it was self defence, not sure on that though. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for the June class.
Another co worker of mine got offered the IOI job maybe two weeks ago. At first he took it, then he called back and turned it down. He couldn't move at that time. I think he was offered Pittsburgh and Virginia.
That's it for now.
Has anyone else gotten any calls since last week?? TX22, Simon, Science...??
I already put my 2 weeks in and my boss was already saying that she does not want for me to quit....she actually told me that she was hoping that I would not get offered the job :o ......too bad ha! :D
Anyway...I'm just counting down the days now until 16 May :p
Good luck everyone.
I've heard nothing since I met with the investigator early April. I know he talked to a million ppl tho. I kept getting calls from friends. My landlord stopped me the other day to tell me he had talked to him too. I have no idea if my BI is done yet or not, but he was sure moving fast the first few dayz.
I also would rather see the August class then the June simply b/c i have so much going on even tho my current job sucks. Plus, I'll know better what to expect cos 3Turner will report back to all of us. :-)
:D :D
Does anyone know how to find out if you've actually "passed" the BI? Has anyone not passed, and if so, how did you find out? Letter? Call? PM me if don't want to share.
I travelled a lot outside the US for vacations, etc. They seemed a little more bent on if i had problems in customs more so than if i performed well at my current job. I wonder if that will put a damper on things. Mebbe I'm thinking wayyy too much into it.

You can call the ATF to try to get some info, but they will not tell you very much. I called on April 15th and the lady I spoke to told me that my BI had not cleared yet. That was all the info I was able to get out of her. I was suprised to her this, because my BI investigator had sent in my BI about a month earlier. Does anyone know if it is normal for a BI to take this long to clear? And what exactly does clear mean? I don't think that I am going to be in the June class, I am just wait to hear something about the August class. Good Luck to all!

Hey
Did your friend that turned the job down not get his 1st choice? Did the other people you worked with that took the job get there 1st choice? This is my worry not getting my 1st choice. It is so hard not knowing.

He didn't get his first pick, but his first choice was in the Buffalo, NY area, which is not hiring. They told all of us right out of the gate that the state of NY was not hiring, he just took a chance on that I guess. He did get his second pick which was PA. (Really though, I think that counts as pick #1 because he Knew NY was a no go anyway).
My other co workers, I think they got their first picks. One went to PA, he picked it because it's close to western NY, I'm sure it was his first. The other co worker went to either VA or NC, I can't remember. It was likely his first pick. So far it looks like everyone is getting their first pick, if they've never been told it's completely unavailable. I bet you'll get it too.

If you are worried about your background or just wondering how it all works. I know a person that did not pass the background for the FBI. He was notified by mail and given a # to call. You are able to file with the Freedom of Information Act to find out what was said about you by everyone interviewd and what was written about you. Sometimes the agency will give you a chance to explain depending on what they find. This person did not pass because of some ticket he got when he was 17 and because a boss at a job he held when he was 16 said that he was late for work somtimes. My friend filed all the forms and I am happy to say that he made it!
And sometimes if it is just a small difference in info your case worker will call you for a statment as to why there is a difference in what you told them and what was found.
I don't know how accurate this info is but I do know that you can file under the Freedom of Info Act to find out.
And just to add to what was said, My BI keeps asking my friends and family that he interviews for more names of people that know me to. What is up with that? I am glad the hear that they are doing it to other people to.
Good luck

Do you know how long it took before the guy got his reject letter after the BI started? I've heard OPM sometimes will sit on it for months and months, and you'll never know till wayyy later down the pipeline........
Mebbe I should just stop worrying about this cos i'll make myself crazy thinking i forgot something since i didn't get "the call."

Science, I would not worry too much, besides...I don't think that OPM has any part of the BI for the ATF. My investigator was a retired ATF agent and contracted with the ATF. The only step I would think that may involve ATF would be the adjudications step, but ATF would have to notify of the results. Just wait for "the call" :D ....if it rings, they will call  .
My BI keeps asking my friends and family that he interviews for more names of people that know me to. What is up with that? I am glad the hear that they are doing it to other people to. the BI does this to find people, for instance, that you may not have referred to him/her because that person has particular knowledge in a certain thing that you would hide or did not want to provide to the BI. I do that all the time when I do my BIs  , especially when one person tells me about somesort of issue "red flag" and they have knowledge of who was with the subject at the time...I get those names and numbers.
Does anyone know how to find out if you've actually "passed" the BI? Has anyone not passed, and if so, how did you find out? Letter? Call?I only know of HQ calling and offering the job, I don't think that they will send out any of those dreaded "thin letters" until later when they send them out in bulk for those who the ATF does not want to pick up.

The lady may have ment that your case has not been adjudicated when she said "cleared". Especially since you know that the investigator has finished your case completely. Suprisingly, my case took a shorter amount of time that a normal BI would take. I think Recon's was short also...fedster's I think was complete back in 12/2004...right? Anyhow, the process is moving swiftly compared to other agencies right now.

I agree with 3T. My background was quick. I didn't receive any call from him that he completed. My file did have a priority on it with a return date of 4/2. The BI said that he would have it done and emailed to D.C. on 3/31. Also, as 3T said, my BI was a retired ATF agent. OPM doesn't have anything to do with this process. The processed the original posting and may have weeded some out at that stage. My offer came by phone from ATF in D.C.
I realize that it is a painful process, but be confident in your abilities and aspirations. Remember we aren't on our agenda, there is a higher power.
Good Luck.

I was just told a partial rumor w/o details that the ATF is placing some sort of hiring freeze on the IOI position. I was also told there's some sort of delay that's happening or going to happen soon. I have no idea if it means this current class, as in June, or the upcoming ones after the June class. Perhaps there's some funding issue. Can they do that after offering you a seat in the class? What if you've already told your supervisors you're quitting? So, if it does mean the June class, then what? And if it's just the upcoming classes after the June class, then the rest of us are screwed?! This partial info came from an IOI supervisor. As I stated, I have no other details. Can someone verify this? ;) ;) ;) ;)

Recon,
Is this what you meant by other agendas and higher powers?

That doesn't sound right to me. I know there was a freeze after 9/11. One of my ex coworkers put in for it before that. Then his file was frozen for 3 years, then he was in the first "thawed" class 6 or 8 months ago. They went like 3 long years without hiring anyone, the result of that is the big push for newbies we're all lucky enough to be a part of. They didn't jump start the process just to freeze it again. That sounds way to fatalist/doomsday. I think you'll get it, I think we'll all get it. The Gov't doesn't put this much work into us to drop us, unless there's some criminalistic past.
You'll get that call.
Three long years............ ugh. :-o I don't think i could continue to lie to myself about liking my current job that long.

I really doubt that anything like this would happen...again. They IOI supervisor may have been hinting at the fact that the fiscal year is almost up. If you sit and think about it, we are already going into May and October is 5 months away. It took about 6 to 6 1/2 months for me from start to finish to get hired. If that holds true, then those people who are going to get into the pipeline from the application submission may have a longer wait, while those that are in the pipeline now are just waiting to get cleared. That would mean enough people for the June class and getting enough for an August class if there is one scheduled. I would think that for those that would not get into one of those classes this fiscal year, I would think that all the persons who are being considered for IOI will be hired by September and then go to the first class available after October. So maybe there may be an October class...like whoever mentioned it previously in this thread or a different thread. Now if there is an August and October class then it is good news for all those waiting....that said, I think the only hiring freeze comming is that there may not be a new announcement out for some time.
By the way, I had told two friends of mine about the position before the last announcement closed on April 2nd....yesterday (April 25th) they both got the letter that they were qualified for the position and referred to the selecting offical. I think that they are right on track to be hired in the 5 to 6 month timeframe if they pass the next few hurdles (ie: get selected for interview, pass interview and pass BI). So, personally I don't think that there will be any type of hiring freeze....just a slower process for those who apply with the next announcements in the future.

I obviously am in no position to give you anything other than my opinion. WTBS...I don't think there is a hiring freeze. I think they are in the process of filling the 100 positions that they said they were filling. I agree with the others in that they are not going to waste time and money going through the process and then canceling every thing at the last minute.
I got a call from my FO yesterday wanting to know a little more personal info about me and to tell me that they were ordering my laptop, cell phone and cards. They were telling me to dress nice since I would be sworn in by the SAC on the first day.
I don't think they could make all of these committments and then cancel. Simon will appreciate this...I have detrimentally relied on there offer.
That applies to the June class. I have no info on the others, but mathematically they can get 100 in a class designed for 48. Anyway that is my .02.
Good luck to everyone.

It sounds like you are safe! I am glade things are moving along for you. Please continue posting your progress, so the rest of us can have an idea of what we will hopefully be experiencing in the future.
I don't have any information to share about any rumors of a hiring freeze for IOIs, but I'll throw my .02 into the pot.
Looking at this from a rationale and reasonable stand point, we know they wanted to hire 100 IOIs (I was specifically told this in my interview). We don't know for which year, but it's reasonable to assume FY05 considering when the majority of us applied and where we are in the process.
Next, I was told during the interview that 300 people were being interviewed for those 100 slots. Gibbarn (currently MIA) has told us there are 48 people in each class and that as of his (or her?) graduation from FLETC, the ATF was still planning on more classes. Great news, let's go with that.
Finally, if you haven't done the Google search for "ATF Industry Operations Inspectors" and read the Congressional testimony, try it. I inferred from the report that IOIs were in very short supply. Can't confirm it; it's just my opinion.
Here's the other .01 of my .02. I'm in at least two other G hiring processes and just started a third. Despite the fact that I'm "probably" close to getting a call or thin letter for an IOI job, I've come to the conclusion that it's out of my hands. I'm continuing on w/ my life and I will let fate, higher power, druken monkeys, or whatever work its magic. (This is not to say I won't be hurdling my dogs as I run to grab the phone everytime it rings).
Good luck. Keep the faith.

I've been quietly reading this thread, and I want to congratulate everyone who has gotten the call, and a wish everyone still waiting for the call a good thought.
Question ?
Has anyone who got the call received the hard copy letter in the mail or fedex outlining their salaries and duty station addresses and points of contact...
AND, IF YOU DID...
Can you post what your start date is; may 16 or May 31.
Thanks...

I have not gotten a "hard copy" but it is on it's way (according to the FO)
I had the option of May 16th or May 31st. I chose May 16th.

Yes,
I believe your right, its' supposed to be on its way, but it might be delayed since the volume of work the personnel office has is tough to manage. The letters are important though, since they give you a definitive salary, and for personal, TSP, of FYI reasons, this is good to know. Besides, having the letter in hand is always re-assuring. Since your a 05/16 start date, just two weeks away, please post when you do get.
Thanks,
