I heard it from the horse's mouth, the governor's office denied the PSP's request to lift the residency requirement.

Their website now says that you must be a resident at time of appointment. It used to be you needed to be a resident at the time you first applied.

I dont know. According to the recruiters I have spoken to recently, anyone can now test with PSP. If that is the case, I see the PSP hiring process being even more competitive(as if it wasn't enough already). I know officers in MD who have applied. As you've mentioned, according to changes done on the PSP website, anyone can apply.

I doubt the PSP will even fathom hiring anyone from out of state only because there would be WAY to much pressure from residents within Pa.

I disagree. I dont see the logic in the PSP offering the exam to out-of-state folks only to turn around and say,"We cant hire you because you dont live in PA." Furthermore, what real say do the locals have on the matter. Its good to be politically correct but when everything is said and done, do you really think the PSP cares about how PA resident John Doe feels about the way they(PSP) hire people. Is that fair? No. Do I agree with it? No. However, is that the way the VAST MAJORITY of depts throughout this country operate? Absolutely. In the end, depts hire who the want to hire. It sucks and its unfair but thats a reality.

I see the PSP catching up with the times here letting out-of-state folks compete. The PSP is one of the best agencies at the state level but I always considered them to be somewhat behind the times on certain things. It took them forever to get rid of those silly revolvers when almost all depts were using the better semi-autos. They have kept this residency requirement for so long when so many other state agencies just as good as the PSP dont have such a requirement. These other state agencies hire ALOT of out-of-state- folks and it works.

I dont aspire to be a PSP TRP. But for anyone who does regardless if he or she is from PA, I say GO FOR IT. What do you have to lose.

A woman who works at the Bureau of personnel told me that they wanted to lift the residency requirement but that the governors office blocked it.

Joe,

You would be suprised the effect the rsidency requirement has on the services delivered to people (or at least what they expect). Someone from Indiana co. might not want a Philly person delivering LE services but they would like to have someone from maybe the Pittsburgh metro area. I dont agree with it but you have to deliver the expectations to the people you work for.

I see your point. I understand what you are saying.........
