I've been quietly reading this thread, and I want to congratulate everyone who has gotten the call, and a wish everyone still waiting for the call a good thought.

Question ?

Has anyone who got the call received the hard copy letter in the mail or fedex outlining their salaries and duty station addresses and points of contact...

AND, IF YOU DID...

Can you post what your start date is; may 16 or May 31.

Thanks...

I don't think there will a delay in the hiring process things are moving to fast and what was said before about the ATF not hiring for such a long time is true. They are very short on IOI's.

We will all get the call! :)

Yes, I got a very cheerful call, but i'm sorry that I have no further info since things got quiet after the phone call. I believe the personnel office is working overtime to calculate and process salaries, and get written confirmations out to everyone.

I spoke to someone in the ATF who said there might be a temporary slow down on new hires. It wasn't official but a rumor and not to be concerned b/c they believe it's only temporary and people should be receiving calls again. This person also said the June and August class is still on. :)

Hey, thanks for getting us all back in the right mind set! Now if they would just call
I believe that my Background is done. Everyone that I put on my SF was talked to, I am just not sure if he went to my Univ yet. I am thinking that he will send it in at the end of this week or next week!

I have question to anyone that can answer it, did any of you have people on your SF that were out of state from you? And did a BI talk to them. Most of my friends that know me live all over the nation.
Thanks

This is the second time today that someone has posted the same thing in two threads. This time, it was by someone with enough time/posts on the board to know better. I suggest that this person take a second and read the board rules, which he apparently has never bothered to do in the almost-one year he's been a member here (sad).

Guys, just as ya'll get tired of hearing about the board rules, we get tired of harping on the subject - tired of moving posts left in the wrong threads, tired of breaking up arguments, and tired of deleting peoples names and phone numbers from threads, people opening threads that are a month old, just to hijck them in another direction (that one kinda stumped me - ??). And that was all just today. Read the rules. Read them now. There's a time coming when we just chuck it all and start giving people 2 weeks off here, a month off there - for silly violations that should only be committed by board newbies - just because they didn't bother to abide by the conditions that have been set here.

If you want to talk about your application "status" with an agency, I suggest keeping that conversation limited to one thread at a time, not only to keep the board less confusing and keep people from doing these stupid things, but also so that any of ya'll who ARE in that agency's process can find all the pertinent info you need in one spot.

Finally, if you haven't done the Google search for "ATF Industry Operations Inspectors" and read the Congressional testimony, try it. I inferred from the report that IOIs were in very short supply. Can't confirm it; it's just my opinion.

Okay Simon, in the closed thread you had mentioned the congressional testimony....but I can't find it :o . Could you please provide a link 'cause I would like to read that report. I have tried finding it for about an hour now. Thanks

Nothing new on this end. I'm finding some comfort in that I'm not the only one whose phone isn't ringing. I guess there might have been some truth to the rumor of a hiring slow down. Well at least you know your background has cleared. My investigators have turned in their paperwork but it has not been reviewed yet. The person on the phone could not give me a timeline. Do you happen to know when your field investigators finished your background? My process started out really fast now it seems I've hit a bump in the road. ;)

My thoughts are that the next job offer calls will come in June. If the next class is Aughust, it's probably in the beginning of it as the June class is June 8, and the course only runs 7 or 8 weeks. If they want us to see the field for 2-4 weeks before heading down to FLETC, that would mean to give the usual 2 weeks notice, the earliest calls would be in late june. That's just next month, right? It'll get here right quick. I've got my thumb permanently on the "talk" button. Anyone hear anything else?

The field investigator finished my background in mid-March and sent his report to DC. That lead me to believe that I was going to make the June class, but I never received the call. On April 15 I called DC and was told my background had not cleared yet. It was not until today that I found out that my background is complete and waiting to be reviewed by the selection committee. So I would not worry to much about a the bumps in the road.

I am not expecting to hear anything from DC until the middle of June. I am guessing that is around the time they will start filling the august class. I hope we all make into the August class!

Good Luck!

I think it is the # on the front page of the background packet that was sent to you. The # to call if you have any questions. I had to call it once about my finger prints and the lady told me that there is only 4 or 5 ladies that work in that office so if they don't answer someone will call you back if you leave a message.

As for my info about the June class being filled as of 5/10/05. It was a rumor amongst two IOI sups told to me yesterday.

On 5/9 I was offered the position with a start date of 5/31, which put me in the June class. I accepted the position and mentioned that I am getting married on May 29. I was told that I could probably be placed in the August class if I preferred. Yesterday, 5/10, I was told that they approved me for a new start date, Aug 8, which will put me in the August class.

The reason I know that they will be calling in mid-June is because I was told that I will receive written conformation of the offer in mid-June when they start to fill the august class.

By the by, has anyone else heard these fantastic things about the job?
1) Three day weekend every other weekend due to an alternate work schedule, 2) Three hours a week they'll pay us to work out instead of being in the office,
3) They're shifting more towards working out of the house than out of the office.

This truely is the job of jobs. I've got that info on good authority too, from my friend that got hired by the Pittsburgh office about 6 months ago. He says he believes it's all nationwide perks, not just relegated to his office.

I asked her when I first applied for the position and she stated that it is mostly all class room (lecture) type stuff with some occassional practical exercises. There is no physical agility requirements since this is a non-sworn position. They have reduced the class to 9-weeks from the original 10 that she stated she went to a few years ago. When she went through, they were still called ATF Inspectors.

ATF SAC

Grooming standards as a question always worry me. I can tell you that a number of years ago an inspector was fired for refusing to wear a tie for their official photograph and that it was sustained. Work enviroment may vary depending on the assignment from suit to professional business casual and that IOI's like agent draw on an allotment of utility type clothing and gear suitable for other kinds of assignments (no point in wearing a suit to inspect explosive storage facilities or do inventory at a firearms dealership.) Figure conservative haircuts and facial hair as a norm. IOI's are government representatives usually interacting with business types.

Thirdtime
05-17-2005, 17:01
ATF SAC,

I would really be interested in hearing your opinion of the diversity of the IOI position...I've heard that no two days are alike, and I read between the lines from your last post today that different gear may equate to varying and interesting assignments....could you elaborate...

Third...

ATF SAC
05-17-2005, 17:21
Perhaps a bit less diverse than back in my day when it was fully ATFE on both the criminal and regulatory side; but plenty. The diversity of work cuts three ways at least. Partly it will change depending on where in the legal industry you are working. One thing to be at the corporate level at Ensign Bickford, another inspecting magazines of explosives for compliance with requirements at a local dealer. One thing to be schmoozing with execs over at Glock USA and another to be verifying inventory at some shady dealership, still another to be involved with a seminar for small firearms dealers throughout a region.

Then there is the diversity of mission. Is this a revenue matter relating to taxes owed? Is it a compliance issue relating whether a license will be issued or continued? Is this an administrative issue or a request for assistance in a criminal matter?

Last is the diversity of industry. Could start the day with an issue relating to explosives and finish with one related to firearms.

Mix them up and you may go from the boardroom to a field full of bunkers, from a seminar in a hotel room to a warehouse, from checking records and databases in the office to physically checking and documenting firearms in inventory at the scene of a robbery homicide involving a gun shop, with maybe a stop after lunch to testify at an administrative hearing. Like the agents, IOI's generally have some clothes changes in the trunk of the car.

IOIBT (industry operations investigator basic training) only last 7 1/2 weeks now. I haven't been yet but I understand it is packed with information. I will find out in June and July.

Nothing new to report. However, since "the calls" seem to have diminished, I thought I'd share some positive news, even if it's already been covered.

I called DC earlier this week just to confirm they have everything they need from me (Okay, who am I kidding, I wanted INFO!) and was told they're still planning to begin calling for the August class in the middle of June. The woman I spoke with said my BI had cleared, so they'll only need to do an update over the phone prior to any subsequent offer for the August class.

I know this isn't late breaking news, but at least it gives us something to keep our spirits up as we wait for tidbits of info from Recon and everyone else in the June class. On a personal note, I've finally graduated, so now I can spend more time reading threads and waiting for the phone to ring. Lucky me!

I am a current ATF IOI and can probably answer some of your questions. The list just came to our office today and we are getting 4 new people for the June FLETC class. The IOI course at FLETC is continually improving thanks to the efforts of Mr. K down at FLETC. When you get to your new office, before FLETC, you could study someone's manuals that went down there before you but there is really no reason to do so. The goal of FLETC is not to flunk you out but to make sure that you have a decent understanding of the industries and regulations you will be working in. I thought FLETC was very easy but I also knew a lot about firearms and that industry. As far as grooming standards go, I think ATF SAC hit the nail on the head when he said you are a government representative. Some offices, including mine, have strict guidelines about your clothing out in the field (i.e. Royal Robbins pants and polo shirts). One thing I will warn all of you taking this job is that if you do want to eventually become an agent (as many do and have did), do not come into the office and begin proclaiming this fact. You need to take the time to learn this job before you think about switching. The one thing I can tell you about this job is that ATF IOI's are handled differently in every office. I average 2-3 nights in a hotel per week and my office only covers two states. Other people that I know of in different districts have not spent the night in a hotel since their hire date. Any other questions you can PM me.

Quick question to anyone reporting at the end of the month...

The official notification/reporting letters, or least mine, lists everything except a reporting time. Should it be assumed that it's a 9:00 am reporting time to the field office on the first day....

lukeaustin

ThirdTime,
You will receive a call from your Area Supervisor prior to your first day telling you what time to show up at the office. Your first day you will probably wear a suit and tie as you will be getting sworn in by the SAC. My first day started at 8 AM.

I found out in late April that my background investigation was just completed. (It began in early Dec 04) They were waiting to hear back from the IRS. Of course I waited until the last day to file my taxes because I owed a ton this year. That put me out of contention for the June class. Very frustrating since I began this Process in June of last year. I did talk to a lady in Washington and she said there is an Aug. class. I expect to hear from them in the last two weeks of June. It will be very exciting to put a face with the name when we finally get to meet in Aug.

I tried asking this question once (PM) and never got an answer - maybe one of you nice people can help:

I tried doing a search, but to no avail.

For those who interviewed for the IOI position THIS year (Jan-Mar), have you received anything more? If so, how long after the interview did it take? What exactly was the next step?

I'm wondering if this is for a different group who interviewed for the position, than the group I'm in - I have yet to hear ANYTHING on this position - and I interviewed in Jan/Feb this year.

If I'm not being considered anymore, I would have thought I would have received a thin letter by now????

Can anyone lend me some information please??

THanks!

I would call ATF recruiting if I were you. I have called them a few times during the hiring process and they have been very helpful. This is the gov't you never know what may have happened. They could have lost your file. I would think that they would let you know if you didn't pass the interview. Everyone who I have spoken to on this forum who interviewed back in Jan and Feb are already through the whole process and are just waiting for a call. You can find the recruiting number on the ATF website (www.atf.gov) under the JOBS tab. Hope this helps.

My current job has quite a few people who are jumping ship for this IOI thing. One of which interviewed just a little after you and hasn't heard a thing. Several others of which got the letter saying they were "qualified for the job", and they got that letter ages ago, and they haven't heard anything since. There seems to have been a big slow down on all accounts. My bet is they're concentrating on the stack of papers they've had on they're desks a little longer before getting to those.

On the other hand, one of my other coworkers interviewed and told them he was not interested in relocating (He lives in Western NY where they are NOT hiring). About 2 or 3 months after that he got a letter saying he was no longer being considered for the position.

If you haven't got that letter yet, then you're still in. All you can really do is sit tight. At the same time, maybe you should give them a call to check on your paper work. I'll PM the number to you IF I can find it. All the best

Have any of you ever heard about this stuff happening????? Should I be concerned?????

See, the difference between an experienced IOI and a newbie is that the experienced will always take a little extra per diem when it is offered. Or the bargaining unit has rules about weekend travel or the course content requires that last full day or all of the above. It really is a great job don't get ulcers over the extra day or two.

Don't be overly concerned about the file review. That is a status that you are in until selections are offered. not like a room full of folks are full time looking at your stuff. Recognize there are a lot of moving parts here including budget and training availability issues that get considered alongside the "file review".

Hey Tex,

I saw on an earlier post that you asked for cities in Texas? I think I asked for Dallas, Ft. Worth, and OKC. This waiting is driving me nuts. I keep giving my wife speculation and I think shes getting tired of it. I started this last year and told the guys that interviewed me in Dallas (last Aug) that I wouldn't be available until Aug of this year because of some contract work I had. Yeah, I asked for Houston, San Antonio, Dallas and Fort Worth. I picked Seattle WA as my last choice. I have been living here for the last two years and I desperately want to get back to Texas. I have heard so many rumors about slots in Texas that it's making my head spin. First I heard that Houston and San Antonio were fully staffed, then I heard that they were approving additional slots. Science, you should take the job...you can always transfer later.

3Turner, Where are you in all of this? I can't remember. ARe you in a class now, or in the August class? It's been awhile since i've checked this forum. I did accept the job, but i haven't worked out any of the details. it's really stressful moving across the country w/o a lot of time between the training in GA then reporting back. Ah well....

I received notice that I was qualified in December, tested in January, interviewd in March and just sent it all my BI stuff last week 6/17. Anyone else in this same boat?

Also was wondering for those who are in and done with their BI, how long did your BI take and what can I expect?

Thank you for helping a anxious guy out. :o
My BI was started in Mid-December 04 and was not finished until late April 05. I was in the military and moved around a lot so that may have contributed to it taking so long. I got the call about a month later. I also believe that it took so long because the IRS was holding up approval, waiting for me to file my 04 tax return.

How is the training at FLETC set up? Is it like a classroom with lectures? Indep. Study? Is there a big test at the end? Any tests along the way? What happens if you do not pass the test - will you have the opportunity to take it again?

Thanks for your help!

It's classroom. You'll be in class with about 50 other people. There will be 5 or 6 tests along the way. I think you can fail a few of them, but you want to keep your average above a certain point. If you study, you'll pass.
I get my info from a friend who already went through it. I don't know much else about it, except that the exact same piece of chicken will be part of 100's of meals until someone finally eats it. After a few days in the cafeteria down there, you'll see what I mean.

However, I'd feel a lot better if I had something in writing about my new job or at least a phone call from my my future place of business. Guess it's the stress of moving that's got me wondering.

Looking forward to meeting everyone in a few weeks!

Oh, I'm in the August class alright. I'm moving to the SLC office. I don't know what my exact plans are, but I think it's going to involve a storage unit, and three unfortunate cross country trips (ie drive my stuff to utah, then down to GA, then back to UT) I haven't worked it all out yet. As far as finding a place, My area manager (or whatever the title was) said the office there would send me a packet of info on where to live, apartment listings...ect. They seem pretty helpful.
You won't have to wear a suit every day, they'll give you some make shift uniforms on the first day (probably collared pull over shirts and pants). You will most likely have to wear a shirt and tie on the first day, as that's how it all worked when I went there for immigration training.

I got another call from ATF yesterday, this one was from a future co worker assigned to get me the housing info. He says the training at FLETC consists of a defensive driving course (I took this one before, it consists of driving around a cone obtical course, and skidding in circles enough to make you sick), and a day at the firing range. Obviously this isn't an all inclusive list, but I just thought you all might be interested.

Hi all, been a bit busy and have not been able to post. But to those previous posts that I can recall...the chicken is good, not great. I have not seen any repeat pieces of chicken, but I have noticed that the left overs from lunch will show up a dinner that same night. Wednesday is steak day :D .

So far there have been 4 tests at each class, so I don't think they would take any away or add any others.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but the driving block of instruction has been removed and something else has been inserted in its place...a lot more fun if I do say so my self .

But there is talk of another type of "requirement" that may end up in the training that no other class has been required to do...no details as of yet since it is still up in the air and has not been brought up since mentioned.

Good luck to all who are still waiting for calls.

Don't be shy about calling your new area supervisor and saying hi and introducing yourself. Sometimes your office is the last to hear that you are coming and you can fall into the trap where your new office is wondering why you haven't called and you are wondering if they are rude. Not the best start and really a product of you knowing where you are going well before they do. Go ahead and ask for info about the area or where other IOI's live. Also a nice opportunity to introduce yourself to the DIO (you may be working in a different location). Good question is to find out whether the practice in the new office is to use a government vehicle for work or to use a personal vehicle on a reimbursable basis (hint, most inspectors use their own car).

Also a good opportunity to find out about your first day. I would generally meet with the new inspectors after a few hours of paperwork and administer the oath of office, but sometimes would drag them and new agents in front of a Federal Judge for the oath. (humbly, I was better at it than the judges who often said "Raise your right hand and repeat after me" and then read the whole thing non stop. I would pause every few words. Really humbly, they were more impressive with it than me.)

Biddy,

I think we've all been in the same "waiting" boat at one time or another. I won't bore you with the stress I went through during my wait. It was brutal. Regardless, it doesn't hurt to call and confirm with ATF that they've received your packet. That'll be good for your sanity. However, I wouldn't call on a daily basis. Remember: No thin letter means you're still in the hunt.

In my opinion, the fact that you were selected to complete a BI packet is a very good sign. Do your best to focus on the good news: They're planning on an October class! The August class runs from Aug. 22nd to Oct. 7th, so in theory you should know something soon.

Good luck and keep the faith.

Three weeks is a very short period of time to expect anything. I think I waited a few months before the BII contacted me. If you got this far you're a shoe in. I wouldn't count on the October class though (sorry if I sound overly negative). I say that just because I sent in my BI packet at least 5-6 months ago, and am only now in a FLETC class.

Hey guys,
I have been traveling alot for the past two weeks so I have been out of the loop. Simon, sorry I didnt reply to your PM until today. I have some apartment and housing guides for OKC and if anyone needs some for the Dallas-Ft.Worth area I will be glad to send some to you.

I am still waiting to hear from the Dallas field office to speak with my new supervisor. I tried to call this evening to introduce myself but it was after 5pm so I got the message machine. I am getting very excited about the first day on the job; 8 Aug and class on the 22nd.

For those of you who are newer, remember that the govt has spent a lot of time and man hours on you already for the BI and so forth, you are likely good to go, just a waiting game now. My BI was started in Dec 04 and was not completely finished until 22 April 05. I got the call in June. It can take a while. Others on this board were finished with the BI in a month. I was very frustrated because I started this whole process in May or June of 2004 and it took so long in between contact with any officials. I kept setting dates in my mind and then assuring my wife that "next month" this or that should happen. I was full of self doubt because other people were through the whole thing in six months.

When I was waiting I found comfort in this message board as it was the only source of information I could get. I suppose we all learned early that we need to count on each other for help and inspiration. If your paperwork is taking longer than others on the board, dont worry. We all concern ourselves that we may not make the "next" class. Dont worry, there are going to be more classes. You will get the call. Dont ever wish time away, you only get it once. Patience

We are all in this together.

Godspeed,

Drew

Collared shirt and khaki pants, both from your own wardrobe. A liberal uniform, if you will. There should be a "uniform" uniform down at FLETC though.

Once you are through training you will be getting a "kit" of equipment including BDU type tan pants and soft golf type shirts, jackets, which will be useful for certain field work. Attire, depending on your assignments will range from full corporate battle dress through business casual to the aforementioned "uniform." Good luck to all of you heading off to new offices, training and what I hope for each of you is a rewarding and fulfilling career.

Keeping the rules working well for business and public safety, keeping your ears open to what is going on in the firearms and explosives industries and gaining cooperation in particular have never been more important. Not all the rules are designed to make it particularly easy to regulate segments, but you should get it that doing good work in this area saves lives up the road.

We are required to wear at least a shirt and tie (suit preferred) unless we are going on an inspection. They are suggesting that we not wear "ATF" stuff on FFL inspections.

Equipment: We ordered and received most of our uniforms and equipment while waiting to go to FLETC.

Just a slight cautionary note. While there is no bar to IOI's applying for 1811 postions both within and without ATF; neither does ATF view the IOI position as a holding or developmental slot for future 1811's. It does not provide some special track to encourage such movement and hiring personnel focus on hiring folks who want to be IOI's as IOI's. Doesn't mean folks can't move around and that they haven't; but it is certainly arguable that there are other positions in the Government with better placement records for 1811 positions (USSS-UD comes to mind). So long as you are aware that ATF wants and needs IOIs the way the FBI needs Intelligence Analysts for example and will try as appropriately as possible not to rob Peter to pay Paul, you should be fine.

There are folks who can, from their experience, figure that I have got this wrong, but I would suggest that this is a result of a big hiring push and restructuring within ATF that occured back in the late 90's. We did in fact on a short term basis make a special focus and effort on getting those Inspector's at the time who wanted to apply to be agents do so. The only time that happened in my 27 years and a number of folks responded, but not most Inspectors. I would really suggest that if an LE gig is your true desire that you apply for that. It is what ATF will make you do if you desire to switch - start at the beginning along with all the outside applicants.

The IOI slot is a vital job for ATF and an excellent job overall but I would seek it on its merits and not as a stage to something else.
