LOS ANGELES -- Police are attempting to determine what led to the death of an airport officer Friday near Los Angeles International Airport. Images: Crash Investigation
The officer was in an airport police patrol car at the intersection of Lincoln and Sepulveda boulevards when he approached a pedestrian at about 11 a.m. Witnesses told police that a struggle ensued.
"The airport police officer was involved in an incident with the pedestrian," said LAX Police Chief Bernard Wilson. "The details are still very unclear."
Police said the suspect gained control of the officer's squad car. The unidentified officer was killed when he was dragged during an attempt to regain control of the vehicle, according to authorities.
The suspect crashed the squad car into a fire hydrant before carjacking a Ford Explorer. Police said the driver of the carjacked vehicle escaped unharmed.
The stolen vehicle crashed through two fences before landing on its roof in a field near the airport's north runway. Police found a pair of tire marks just before the point at which the vehicle crashed through the first fence.
The suspect, identified as 46-year-old William Sadowski, was removed from the Explorer and transported to UCLA Medical Center, police said.
Lincoln Boulevard is closed in both directions Friday afternoon between La Tijera and Sepulveda boulevards.
Airport operations were not affected.
Authorities are attempting to determine what prompted the officer to approach Sadowski.
"This is normally a busy roadway," said LAPD Chief William Bratton. "This altercation was quite visible."
