This question is for all the U.S Coast Guard Reservists out there. Do USCGR units get activated during national disasters such as storms the way that national guard units do? Also, are annual trainings conducted outside the U.S. in the USCGR? Thanks for the info.

In Los Angeles, where I drill, reservists were called out to support the Alaska Air crash several years ago. CG Reservists are called out to support general disaster assistance in coordination with FEMA. Other than Port Security Units which almost always seem to do AT out of CONUS, I don't think many Reservist do AT overseas

I am not a coastie, so I will be shooting from the hip. Having been assisned to a unified command composed of all members from all the services. I know that during disasters like Hurricane Andrew (Florida) Reserve USCG aviation and martime units were activated. USCG Reserve units in Florida have been deployed on more recent humanitarian operations in the Carribean. I am not sure if these were planned as AT's, but I recall units doing port calls in Puerto Rico, Haiti, Bahamas and Dom Rep were they worked along Host Nation Martime Forces. I have found that USCG reserve units are called out routinely to support shuttle launches and provide maritime coverage for numerious air-search-rescue and LE operations off Florida shores.

Hopefully, some Coast Guard fellas can give you some more input!
