South Carolina Trooper Killed in Crash
The Associated Press

SUMTER, S.C.- A state trooper was killed in a crash Monday when his cruiser was rear-ended by an armed robbery suspect, authorities said.

Sumter County Coroner Verna Moore confirmed that a trooper was killed in the accident, but didn't release the name. Moore said she was trying to verify that the trooper's family had been notified.

Police began pursuing the robbery suspect in a red Thunderbird on Interstate 95. The chase came off the interstate and onto state Highway 527 in Sumter County, investigators said. The trooper's car was on the side of Highway 527 when it was hit by the suspect's car.

The trooper's car was pushed into trees and caught on fire, investigators said.

The suspect was arrested and taken to a Sumter hospital. The suspect's name also was not released.

The Sumter County Sheriff's Department is investigating the crash.

His name is now released. He was Jonathan Parker and he was 29 years 'young' and started with the SCHP in 2000. I'm a Trooper in a different county and I didn't know him, but it really feels like a personal loss. Any officer killed in the line of duty is devastating, but especially one from your own agency. My prayers are with his family and May God bless them and help them deal with this senseless tragedy.

My prayers are with his family. All give some, some give all. God rest his soul.

They are charging the suspect with murder as soon as he gets out of the hospital. Based on witness accounts, the suspect intentionally swerved to hit the troopers car. The patrol car was also clearly marked as such, so the guy had to know what he was doing. Just shows how quickly an idiot can go from robbery, to fleeing police, to taking ones life. This guy will be lucky if he ever sees the outside of a prison again. I for one hope he never does.
