WASHINGTON -- Officials with the Metropolitan Police Department said reserve officer Joseph Pozell died Tuesday night at George Washington University Hospital, three days after he was hit while directing traffic.
Pozell was a fixture at the busy intersection of Wisconsin Avenue and M Street, Northwest, in Georgetown. He was working there Saturday night when police said he accidentally stepped into traffic and was struck by a sport utility vehicle.
He was taken to George Washington University Hospital in critical condition.
Officials said his family made the difficult decision to remove him from life support late Tuesday and he died just before 10 p.m.
Those who knew the reserve officer said he will be sorely missed.
"He loved the city, he loved his family and he loved the department and he loved what he did," police Commander Robert Contee said.
A spokesman for the family said Pozell will be buried with full police honors at the Washington National Cathedral, but a date for his funeral has not yet been set.
