Trooper shot during traffic stop

A Missouri Highway Patrol trooper is in critical condition this morning after he was shot multiple times during a traffic stop.

Trooper Brandon Brashear was shot shortly after 2 a.m. after pulling over a white Chevy Monte Carlo that was traveling north on Interstate 470 in Lee’s Summit.

Brashear told dispatchers at 2:08 a.m. that he was in pursuit of the vehicle, suspecting the driver was intoxicated, authorities said.

Dispatchers last heard from Brashear at 2:09 when he told them the car was slowing down and appeared to be stopping.

Other troopers rushed to the scene about five minutes later where they found Brashear lying in the grass on the eastbound side of the interstate exit with several gunshot wounds.

Brashear was able to give troopers a description of the suspect before he was flown to a local hospital where he underwent surgery early this morning. Brashear is out of surgery and listed in critical condition, authorities said.

About an hour later, police were able to track down the suspect to an Independence pool hall where he was arrested. Independence police arrested Tommy R. Rollins, 25, of Grandview on suspicion of first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer and armed criminal action.

The shooting is being investigated by the Missouri Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control.
