NY State University Police

This might be the wrong forum for this question, but does anyone know anything about the New York State University Police (SUNY)? I can't seem to locate a website for them and not all the State University sites have info about them.

I'm wondering specifically where you apply and whether you're expected to relocate to any campus in the state, or if you're assigned to just one location.

Other than contacting the individual campuses, where might I go for info? Thanks for any help.

Hiring for SUNY Campus Police is similar to NYSP. There is a statewide exam given every few years (I think the next one is set for later this year or early 2002). When you take the test, you can apply for upstate or downstate positions (same test, but you have to pay for two separate exams to be considered for both regions). I don't know if you can express preferences for certain locations, or whether it just goes by where the vacancies are.

They only recently--maybe 5 years ago--were granted full police officer status statewide...previously, their jurisdiction was limited to on campus only. I believe they attend the NYSP Academy. I knew one former SUNY officer who transfered to the NYS Parks Police; he said it was an OK job, good experience, but you have the typical problems that most campus cops have (political environment being the big one).

I just happened to think: Does that mean they have the same age limits as NYSP (which I'm beyond)? For some reason I thought they didn't, but now you've got me wondering.

You should call the NY state department of civil service, not local ones. Their website should have the #. Anyway, when the time comes when applications are accepted, the website should provide a link on the page where it is posted and it will tell you the criteria to take the test. It is too far out now to show the link but the will update it when it is closer. Call them though If you want to find ut.

I have no idea what the age standards are for the SUNY positions. Call either SUNY or the civil service commission, they should be able to provide you with a copy of the job specifications and employment standards.

The next SUNY police officer exam is scheduled for 12-15-01 (the announcement is scheduled to open on 09-28 and close on 11-13).
