Hi all,
I have been assigned to a FO in my city of residence. I have lived in the city for 19 years and feel like asking for a transfer to another FO. Would that create a problem if I make such request at this stage. I understand that the need of the Bureau comes first. Your insight will be appreciated.
GM
I guess the question that comes to mind first is, Why do you want to work someplace else? If you are in NYC and have been assigned to NYC, I think you may have a tough time getting the Bureau to support changing the duty location they offered initially. On the other hand, if you are in a smaller and easier to fill location, it may be easier if you are willing to go to a higher cost of living location like NY, SF, or DC. From a surveillance position perspective, there are trade-offs with sending you to the same city you have lived in for 19 years...positive for the agency is that you should know the area very well and not have as steep a learning curve with respect to the geography and map reading parts of the job; negative is that it increases the likelihood of you running into someone you know and possibly compromising what you are doing. That negative is more an issue in a mid-sized location, and less a concern in a city like NY or DC. Very situation specific depending first and foremost, as you said, on the needs of the Bureau. I have no idea how location assignments are made for SSG, but it probably doesn't hurt to discuss it with your AC or someone in HR so long as you can do it tactfully and with the expectation that things probably won't change unless it somehow benefits the agency.

Hey Goodmails! When did you get your final offer? Sounds like it was just recently, since the last time you posted I think your application was in adjudication. If it was recently, then CONGRATULATIONS! I am glad to hear that the long waiting process is over for you! KUDOS man! :)

Good,
Anything is worth a shot. Just get it started (and hopefully figured out) before you leave for training. My initial impression is that they will turn you down b/c keeping you there saves the G money in moving expenses. Also, area knowledge is such an added benefit. 19 years! you must know every side street and back alley in the whole place. Oh, and if you didn't know some of the worse parts of town you will probably get to know them as well. That said if you aren't happy you will not work as hard, and this is a job were morale ebbs and flows a lot. In the end it rarely hurts to ask.

Your situation could be worse, i applied for SSG back in 11/04 and was rated refered to selecting official as a status employee and I have never heard anything back. I guess my area is not in need of SSG;ers.
Good luck to you

Any one else going to SSG training in July?
I got a final offer in the mail today for the Investigative Specialist position from the HQs. I am assigned to my local FO which is roughly 7 minutes drive from my home. My request to change a FO was denied, so I am reporting to duty at my local FO on 6-27-05. Can't wait. Thanks to everyone for your help.

Hey, GM...Congrats, again on being offered the IS position. STILL waiting here. As far as I know, I am complete with all components of the application process with the exception of the BI. When last I spoke to my AC she said that HQ was just waiting for the final report, and that a determination would be made soon thereafter. My BI has been underway for a long time, so I am hoping that by now the investigator has passed all the info on to HQ. With a LOT of luck, I'll hear something soon (yea or nay).
Does anyone know if there has to be some minimum number of days between being given an offer and getting a class date for SSGs? I recall someone mentioning that the Bureau required 30-days. Is his true? If so then I suppose there is NO hope for me getting a July class date IF I am selected.
Thanks, in advance, for any replies to this post.
Congrats GM! Glad to see you will be going to class in July. Have a great time!

JCMC,
There is no 30 day minimum, at least there wasn't one when I came in. There is no reasoning with the G. Some people came in and worked at their processing FO for 2-3 weeks, I only had 9 days total notice, and spent only 5 days working at my processing FO.
Thanks for the info, Rolltide. I am SO ready to go to the Bureau as an SSG that I don't care if they give me 2 days notice! I'll be on the next flight to the Q without any hesitation. Right now I'm just hoping, praying, longing, begging to get that all-important phone call.
Just as an up-date, I called my AC yesterday and she told me that it looked like everything was complete except for one open lead in California. I told her that my parents retired there a few years ago, and that a retired agent had already been to speak with my father. She told me that she was going to call my Analyst at HQ and get back to me. According to my AC, the Analyst is the one that actually follows the progression of the BI and other parts of the application process. In any case, I have not heard back from my AC yet ;) I HOPE she didn't call the Analyst and get word that they were sending me a "thin" letter any day now! That would really suck at this point! At the same time I know that all of these people are extremely busy and probably have better things to do than call me with up-dates. I really do have to hand it to my AC, though. She has really been a VERY nice and completely helpful person. When all is said and done I owe her a box of chocolates!

I have word today that the July class roster has been finalized. There's always the odd last minute add on, but if you (including myself) haven't been called yet, chances are you'll be starting the end-of-August countdown.

Well isn't THAT just "GREAT" news?!?! :crying: Thanks for the up-date, Techlot! Hopefully we'll be in the game come August! Good luck to you and all the rest of us who are waiting!
So I suppose the next logical question is when do you think they will be making the calls for the August class? Do they wait until the July class starts or do they try to ramp up earlier? (Hope that's not a crystal ball thing- just wondering if there is any pattern based on past experience). I figure they would want to give the August folks about 3-4 weeks notice, so maybe early July??? Sound reasonable to anyone else?
