Was wondering if your depts do anything for a civilian dispatcher that passes away? Color Guard, rifle team, anything along those lines? TIA

All of our dispatchers are civilian. In the 25 years my agency has been in operation no dispatcher has ever passed while employed at the PSAP. So I can't speak from experience. If, God forbid, it did happen I would make it a point to seek out and get a police/fire escort for the dispatcher from at least the 3 towns we dispatch for. I personally don't think a rifle guard or gun salute would be necessary but the presence of the police/fire/EMS people the person dispatched for would be outstanding. And that is putting it mildly. From a dispatchers stand point that would mean alot to have a line of patrol cars and fire engines escorting/following. I dont expect a gun salute or bagpipes but just the presence...

Well unfortunately we had a 24 year old dispatcher here die of cancer. We both got hired on the same day. He was here about 6 months before he was out with his medical condition. Poor guy wilted away infront of everyone. He REALLY WANTED to be a Police Officer at the dept. we work at and had a good chance.

My original question came about due to lack of sworn support at the funeral. There was a few of the shift officers there (great guys) and our LT incharge of us. About 10 out of the 200 sworn attended. It was a Funeral Mass as he was cremated.

There was no patrol cars outside after, no bag pipes, really nothing. Chief showed up for about 10 mins and then left. Don't even think he talked with the family. Best of my knowledge he really didn't even check to see how the poor guy was doing, while he fought for his life for 1 1/2 years

Just really frustrated at being treated like a second class citizen.

Lupey sorry to hear about the loss of one of your co-workers. I might be able to shed some light onto why nobody showed up. I think that they might not have known the guy if you know what I mean. I am not saying this right they should have at least shown him some respect but in larger departments like yours how many police officers do you know. :(
