Yes, it's true. The Olympics are looking for dispatchers to volunteer their time to help out. It's being organized by the Utah Olympic Public Safety Command. As a volunteer, you have to pay your own way out to Salt Lake City, however, the UOPSC will take care of housing, feeding and clothing you. Yes, clothing you...apparently you'll be required to wear one of their
uniforms. They are looking for dispatchers who can volunteer the whole 21 days of the Olympics, as it takes time and money to train the dispatchers who'll be working the venues. But, they will probably accept those who can spend less time.

If you are interested in volunteering for Olympics and being part of a historic event (not to mention that it might look impressive on a resume), surf over to: http://www.uopsc.org/ and check out the application process. Or you
can call Jennifer Whimpey @ 801-257-2742, Jim Lewis @ 435-615-3521, or Jeff Pittman @ 801-257-2472. You can also drop a resume at:

I would love to go, but I don't think I could sway the Brass to fall for it as "Training"

The only way I justified to our Director is that I would be representing our agency at the 2002 Winter Olympics. It remains to be seen if that will be enough to justify paying my salary for 21 days and paying out OT to cover my absence. Me thinks it won't...But what a experience it would be......*sigh*

Well I couldn't believe it, after sending my Director that request to go he sent back a e-mail asking for me to put together a letter written to the Board of Police and Fire chiefs...(and aldermen) as to why I should be allowed to go. Wow! I thought for sure I would just get a "No". So I sent him a letter and he said he'd pass it along. So now I'm waiting until after the meeting which is sometime this week for the answer. My fingers are crossed but my hopes are not up....
