View Full Version : Past Job Info.
I need to figure out if there is a way I can find out all the jobs I've had in the past. I have been asked to get all the job info. for the past 20 yrs. I don't want to screw up and forget one. Thanx.

I believe there's a way you can do it through the Social Security Administration. B/C of taxes on all your legal jobs, the government has records on all your previous employment. Getting it may not be free of charge, but I have heard of people getting the list you're looking for this way. I don't know the exact process, but if the SSA has a 'general info' 800 number I'm sure someone there can lead you in the right direction.
Hope this helps!

This was from a previous post submitted by Dano:
Social Security Records can be obtained at the local Social Security office ($35). Check their site for contact info and locations:
http://www.ssa.gov/
Also, I did a little research on the ssa website for you:
To obtain a detailed statement of your employment history, you need to complete Form SSA-7050-F4, Request For Social Security Earnings Information.
Under most circumstances there is a charge involved for detailed earnings information. Considerable clerical handling is required in preparing this information. Unlike the earnings information used to compute Social Security benefits, which is electronically available, detailed earnings information must be extracted from microfilmed records through a tedious, labor-intensive operation requiring visual examination of each record before a statement can be produced and released. We do not charge for providing more detailed earnings information when it is needed for correcting a Social Security record or for establishing entitlement to Social Security benefits.
You may obtain Form SSA-7050-F4, which also includes the fee schedule, from our Web site at: http://www.ssa.gov/online/ssa-7050.pdf
To read and print this form on a personal computer, you will need a copy of the Adobe Acrobat Reader software. This software is available free of charge from Adobe's Internet server at: http://www.adobe.com/prodindex/acrobat/readstep.html
The Social Security Administration does not charge a fee for providing individuals with a statement showing yearly totals of earnings, the amount of Social Security taxes paid, an estimate of future benefits, and the number of credits you have under the Social Security program. Normally, this is all the information that is needed to determine Social Security benefits. You may obtain a Social Security Statement at: http://www.ssa.gov/statement/
Take care,
Steve
Thanx for the info. It is worth every cent of $35.
Just another side note...
When I needed the same info, I went to a local office, explained what/why I needed it ("government job"....which sounded important), and the guy gave me a print-out on the spot, no charge. I'm not saying you can depend on this, but in my case, I needed it immediately and it worked out.
Good luck.
I'll try that first and I'll let you know how it turns out.
I needed to get a detailed earning statement recently. It will cost you if you need the employers information. It is free of charge if you just need dates and your earnings. They only accept personal check or money order.
I had this same problem. I talked to a guys a the SS office and he said to talk to the IRS to get all my w-2's. He said SS charges a fee and the IRS doesn't. Give the IRS regional office where you are at a call.
I thought I replied to this post but after reading them all I guess I didn't. This type of info is very easy to get, Anyone who tested with the NYPD know's about it since they make you get your info for them.
1. Look in the phone book under fed Govt your local SSA should be there.
2. Go there in person and ask for a print out WITH a stamp from the SSA of your past work history.
3. Make a copy for yourself incase you are going to fill out another apl for another Police dept in the future.
I don't remember what the cost was but the info you get is worth it.
Good luck
I agree with snpusmc. The fee is nominal considering the comprehensive information you get. It is valuable for any hiring process
My report only went back 10 years and cost $35. I would think going back 20 years would be a hell of a lot more complicated unless they automated all their historical records...Only one way to find out.
Who wants you to go back 20 years?!?!? Even the Feds only make you go back 10! That sounds like a real hassle.
