Kirkwood [St. Louis suburb] officer dies after shooting

11:28 PM CDT on Tuesday, July 5, 2005

KMOV-TV

An officer with the Kirkwood Police Department died Tuesday evening after he was shot while on duty.

Sgt. William McEntee, a 24-year veteran, was responding to a fireworks-related disturbance call in the 400 block of Alsobrook near Interstate 44 and Big Bend when he was shot several times.

He was taken to St. John's Mercy Medical Center where he later died.

Police say the suspect in the case walked up to McEntee's patrol car when he arrived on the scene and began shooting.

A second person also was wounded, but police say that victim is a juvenile so no details or updates on the victim's condition were released.

A manhunt was under way Tuesday for the shooter. The suspect is reportedly armed and dangerous.

About a dozen area departments were involved in the search, including helicopter and K9 units.

More information will be released as it becomes available in the case.

A reminder to NEVER, EVER treats any call as "routine". How many of us over the years have responded to a dozen or so fireworks calls every July 4ht or New Years Eve? May God bless and strengthen this Officer's family and may He wreak vengence of Biblical proportions on his murderer.

Kirkwood is my hometown. I saw cruisers responding, and helicopters overhead. Although K-wood is a city of 35000 (suburb of St. Louis, MO), it is still a very close knit community. Please keep his family in your prayers.

KSDK-The wide ranging search for murder suspect Kevin Johnson came to an end Friday.

Johnson was in custody in north St. Louis County Friday afternoon.

Police say Tuesday night Johnson snuck up on McEntee's patrol car and started shooting at point-blank range. Johnson's family says he may have been distraught over the death of his 12-year-old brother, Robert Long, called Bam Bam by his family, who died Tuesday evening from a congenital heart failure.

Since Tuesday night, St. Louis County Police, acting on tips, had been searching houses and apartment complexes where they thought Johnson might have been hiding.

During the search, Kirkwood Police Chief Jack Plummer said his officerswanted to work 16-20 hours a day, but he must send them home to rest.

Plummer says the department is overwhelmed with the outpouring of support from the community.

The family has released funeral arrangements for Sgt. McEntee. Visitation will be Friday from 2-9 p.m. at Kutis Funeral Home, at 10151 Gravois. The funeral service will start with a 10:15 a.m. prayer service, followed by the funeral at 11 a.m. at St. Simon the Apostle Catholic Church in south St. Louis County. The church is at 11011 Mueller Rd. Sgt. McEntee will be buried at Resurrection Cemetery.
