Officials said Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Todd Larkins, 31, had just pulled a motorist over to the shoulder of the interstate around 1:30 Friday afternoon when a tractor-trailer left the road and hit his car, then hit him. Larkins was killed instantly.
Officials interviewed the driver of the truck, Mitchell Wayne Bowers, as well as witnesses to determine why the semi left the roadway.
Bowers, who is from White House, Tennessee, was arrested after the accident and charged with vehicular homicide. He was being held without bond in the Dickson County jail until his arraignment Monday morning.
The accident happened in the eastbound lanes of I-40 at mile marker 178 in Dickson County.
The interstate was closed in both directions after another accident occurred in the westbound lanes shortly after the one that killed Trooper Larkins.
Nobody was injured in that second accident, which involved several cars, and the westbound lanes were reopened by 4:30 p.m. Friday afternoon.
Larkins was described by fellow troopers as a loyal and dedicated officer. He is survived by his wife and 12 year-old daugter.
Tennessee Department of Safety Commissioner Fred Phillips issued a statement on the death of Trooper Larkins that said, "My condolences go out to the family of Trooper Todd Larkins. Every day, the men and women of the Tennessee Highway Patrol put their lives on the line. They do so because of a great desire to serve others. Trooper Todd Larkins was one of the best. He was a loyal, dedicated young family man, and he will be greatly missed by his friends and colleagues."
Trooper Todd Larkins is the 32nd State Trooper to be killed in the line of duty since the Tennessee Highway Patrol was formed in 1929.
