Chicago man surrenders after police shooting, standoff
CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) -- A man surrendered Tuesday afternoon after a three-hour standoff that began with the shooting of a police officer as authorities tried to arrest the man in connection with two bank robberies.
The officer was part of a joint FBI violent crimes task force, according to Chicago Police Department spokesman Pat Camden. He did not say whether the officer was a member of the Chicago police or the FBI.
The officer and the suspect were taken to a hospital, Camden said. There was no word on the extent of the injuries, Camden noted only that it was "serious at this point."
An FBI SWAT team and police had surrounded the apartment building where they said the gunman was holding the officer hostage.
A man who said he was in the apartment building when the incident occurred said he heard the FBI say, "We have a man down! We need somebody up here!"
Firas Ghantous, who lived on the same hall as the wanted man, told WLS television that he did not see anyone shot and was forced to leave the building after FBI officers entered his apartment.
Ghantous said the man had lived there for about a month with a wife and two young children.
The six-story apartment building is in the 1300 block of Wabash Avenue in the South Loop, a largely residential area south of downtown.
