Is there any CHP officers or cadets that know what the possibilty of choosing your own assignment after the Academ? Does the dept. choose where you go or is that your choice?
Thanks

I am not a CHP officer but I know several of them. They all said you will more than likely be posted to Los Angeles or Oakland for your first assignment. After about a year you will get the chance to go elsewhere, as newer recruits take up positions at those areas.
I heard the same as above...about 80-90% of academy grads. go to Los Angeles! Great agency though!!
About 2-3 weeks prior to academy graduation, they give you a dream sheet, where you list the top three choices of were you want to go. Most do however go to LA or SF. It all comes down to the departments needs. Once you do a year or so at your assignment, you can put in for a transfer. Good Luck, Robert

I am a Cadet right now (2nd week). It all depends on certain factors. All of the following are taken into consideration. If you are married, if you own a house, your rank in the academy, if you are bi-lingual, and finally deparmental needs. About 8 weeks before graduation the give you a sheet with all the open offices in the state. You then fill out your dream sheet. Then its up to the Dept. The last senior class had a split of 60% to 40%, with the 60% going to the Bay area. My senior class will get their sheets in a few weeks, but they are already saying that this class will be an LA class. I guess it all depends on when you show up. I will keep you posted. Hope that helps.
