View Full Version : florida fish and wildlife conservation commission law enforcement
i have just been hired by the fwcc and i thought i would try and let others know that fwcc will be putting another academy through right after mine gets out. the whole process was extremely smooth and streamlined. i cant say enough good things about fwcc from my experience. i just graduated from college and had no prior law enforcement experience. if anyone has any questions feel free to ask and i will try to answer them. i would highly recommend putting in an application with fwcc if you are at all interested in working marine law enforcement or inland law enforcement.
Let me in on what to look forward after I submit application. I have no marine experience except fishing salt water. I am writing to receive an app. Am a veteran, no college. Tell me about the TABE, what score are they looking for. How long did I take u to be thru the whole process. Would should I be concerned about.
Thanks here in Pensacola.:fish:
they are looking for the highest that is possible on the tabe which i think is a 12-9. not sure though. all i know is that you have to score at the top level of the test to move on. it took me about 5 months to go through the whole process. first step is the physical agility, then tabe test, then interview, then background, and then you have your final medical evals/swim test. there is not much to be concerned about in my opinion. i found the process to be very efficient and you always know where you stand in the whole thing. the next academy is supposed to be going in april 2002. good luck and keep in touch.

The FWC officers are made up of the old Game Commission and the Marine Patrol (which used to be part of DEP). They handle game violations, boater safety, and the offshore law enforcement. They do much more but that is the basic info.
The DEP officers (Park Patrol) provide law enforcement to the state's parks. They might be patrolling an urban park or a state refuge. They also assist the DEP special agents with environmental crime investigations. A lot of what each agency does is similar depending on where in the state the officer is working.
Officers in both agencies are state law enforcement officers with jurisdiction over the entire state. I know that DEP has take home cars and I believe FWC does also. The officers I work with, FWC and DEP, handle many different types of calls. I work in a rural area and everyone has to be a jack of all trades.
Hopefully I will be able to speak from experience next time because I am about 99% of the way through the DEP hiring process. I should be hearing something from them in the next few weeks.

fwcc does have a take home car program. more like a take home truck program to be correct. the academy is quite long but i cant wait to start it based on what i will be learning. alligator wrestling, marine pursuits, off road pursuit, sounds like a blast and to get paid for it as well is a dream come true. fwc is also cross deputized as federal enforcement officers and i dont think that dep is.

HEY GOVERNOR, I DIDNT KNOW YOU WENT THE DEP ROUTE. WHAT DID YOU GO FOR PARK PATROL OR INVESTIGATOR? WHICH COUNTY DID YOU APPLY FOR?
i am pretty sure from previous converstaions with governor that he is going for an investigator spot. not positive though

I put in for both positions but the Park Patrol answered first. I eventually want to be an investigator for DEP but am willing to get my foot in the door any way I can.
I put in for statewide and it looks like I am 75% sure I am going to Miami. There is still a small shot that I am going to the Tampa/ST. Pete area. I would prefer Tampa but Miami sounds good too. I currently work in a RURAL area and want to go back to civilization. I go for my drug test next week and then I should get the official word.

I just received a date for a FWCC physical test, what the hell is the TABE test?
The TABE if I remember is like the ASVAB some dept want you to score anywhere from a 9th to 11th grade score. Helen keller can pass this test so if you past HS you should do fine.
the tabe is quite easy. you have to score the top level on the test for fwc. i think it is a 12-9 score. if you have any questions, be sure to ask or just pm me. i start the academy in 10 days. cant wait!

AWHECK,
I have a few quick question for you. What was the physical fitness test made up of? I am a U.S. Border Patrol Agent on TDY at FLETC to teach law and am interested in FWC. I'm in fairly good shape but would like to know what to expect.
Thanks,

the physical agility test is not difficult at all. what got most of they people was the 1.5 mile run. the test consists of 4 parts. the 1.5 mile run, sit ups, bench press, and the sit and reach test. i dont know your age so i cant tell you what the standards that you will have to meet, but from what you posted, you should have no problem with any of it. i am 23 and my scores were as follows.
1. bench press - i did 180 and i weigh 140
2. sit and reach - cant remember, all i know is i passed
3. sit ups - did 59 in 1 minute
4. 1.5 mile run - did that in 9 something
i was first in the run and the sit ups out of the group that i tested with so that should give you an idea of what the other times were. have you requested an application yet? if you have not check the link out at the bottom of the page for information. if you have any other questions, pm me .

Does anyone have any updated info regarding academy dates, locals available, etc. Also if you have a B.S. degree are you exempt from the TABE. Thanks, Greg

I am curious as well. I just mailed off my application. I am also curoius about the TABE requirment and an AA degree. Looking forward to any answers to questions about this process, or any experiences anyone can share.
Thanks, Bryan
I asked them about TABE exemptions and they wouldn't let me out of it with my master's degree, so I'm sure both of you will have to take it.

Yep a masters outranks me by a few...I wonder if they would make my brother take it...he has a PhD in synthetic organic chemistry.
Associates degree and above is exempt from the TABE. Every one must take the CJ BAT according to FWC.
Hey Greg S, how far are you with your application process?
I also have a B.S. degree. Need to know if you have a choice where in Florida to work or would they tell you up front before the academy.
Passed the P/T. Panel Interview on the 24th of this month. B/G invest. are being done the month of July. Academy starts Oct 21. I find out Wednesday when I take the F Bat. Pick of location depends on how well you do in the Academy. Did you apply?

I will take the PT test part of the process July 13th. Based on your timeline what do you think my chances of making the Oct class is? Do you know of the next academy date after that, or who I can ask?
Thanks, Bryan

Do they take oput of state academy's or do you need to go through the full academy?

Everyone, including current FL officers, have to go through the full academy.
George
According to a letter they sent me they will also be doing Panel interviews July 15-19. So I believe you have a shot at the Oct. academy. P/T advice. The Bench press is weird. You use a machine to do a dead weight. Meaning the weight is controlled and you start the lift from the chest. Being a former Personal trainer, I would advise you to do a normal bench press and pause the weight on your chest in between reps. No word on any class dates beyond Oct. Good Luck and haul ass on the run.

Appreciate the great info...I will definately practice your advice. Great Luck in the academy. I wish you the best and I hope I catch up with you in the field to catch some bad guys. Right now I am a CO and I am sick and tired of 8 hours of nothing but bad boys.
Thanks again, Bryan
