Justification! Thought a new thread would be beneficial to those of us still in the pipeline. Specifically, those who applied under announcement # CK203499cs. While the previous threads have been extremely helpful and informative, it seems that most of those individuals posting have either received Cond. Offers or are currently employed. Congrats! Any info on progress would be greatly appreciated! Not to exclude the invaluable insight from those of you who have already fought the fight.. Thanks!

Hey 25,

Yeah, in the pipeline and waiting to hear from the BI at this point. It would be nice if he/she could get this "snooping around in my life" thing started and finished sometime soon! :D

At our roll call meeting yesterday with the DIO, among things discussed was hiring of IOIs for FY06. The plans are to bring about 200 more people on in FY06. The bad news is that the budget for FY06 is worse than it was for FY05. But, the budget for FY05 wasn't the greatest either and we still proceeded to hire quite a few people.

The current employeer is gunna be hurting something fierce! Interview was only an hour and the standard questions! What would you do if .... and What have you learned from your experience doing XXX? Any info folks? :bang:

I just interviewed today myself! I thought it went very well. I normally don't interview well, but a little prep time went along way. I almost freaked out when they said I would start as a GS-9, be a GS-11 at 12 months and a GS-12 at 24 months… if hired! GS-12 is about 62k per year with locality pay! Also was told that if a person already as a TS then the background investigation will be abbreviated and will only consist of checking information from completion date of first TS until present. Good Luck to everyone... now we must wait to see if the BI packet will come in the mail.
:t- up:

Does anyone know how long it will be before the interviewees find out if they will go forward with the application process?

Thanks to everyone who posted their IOI info--it was extremely helpful....here's my timeline:

Applied: Late March 2005
Rec'd OPM "you are qualified" letter: 21 April 2005
Interviewed: 19 August 2005

FYI, the interview was all the basic Q & A's that you would expect. Take a positive attitude in with you and you'll do fine. After all, who doesn't like to talk about themselves? Also, there some "scenario" questions that required you to answer with some common sense. No big deal.

Here's my question: does ATF have a policy on matching the pay level of current federal employees? I'm now a GS-11 with a hefty locality pay, looking at a potential loss of about $13-20K for the first year if I make the transition. (I would still do it though!)

Any insight is appreciated!

Generally, ATF will try to match the pay of your current grade by bringing you over at a higher step of a 7 or 9 depending on for which you qualify. However, locality pay goes with the locality so if you move to an area with a lower rate, you will get that lower rate.

Week 2 of FLETC so far, and it's not so bad. The first test is next Wednsday, and everyone's pretty much terrified.
The instructors say it won't be that bad, but it's the first one. Anyone else get hired lately?

Well, not hired yet - but we've had a break thru!! They are smokin on my BI, just talked to the ATF Investigator at my office, he also spoke to 4 other co-workers. I'm hoping they will finish quickly and I'll get the GRAND CALL.

BTW, for those already successful IOIs, or lucky FLETC goers - where were you placed as compared to where you were interviewed and/or what your top 5 choice offices?

Any information would be appreciated!!

I was placed in my #1 choice (at the time). Try to do some research before you make your picks as this job varies as much office to office as any govt. job.

MW, how long ago did you have your interview?

I interviewed in March of this year. I heard nothing until about four/five weeks ago and since then, everyone has been contacted. I'm hoping this means they want to finish before end of FY - I'm just keeping my fingers crossed.

Sounds like they are putting people where they would like - that would be more than I could ask for....

I'll do more research on previous threads - but thanks so much for all those who responded.

Hey! I finally changed my email so I could post here- I've been following everyone's posts for months in regards to the IOI positions. Here's my timeline:
12/04 applied
1/05 tested
3/22/05 interviewed
7/28/05 rec'd BI package
8/28/05 contacted for BI
9/4/05 BI completed

My BI happened SO fast! My investigator said it was expedited but I don't understand why or what that means for me. He contacted me on Sunday and by Thursday of that same week, he was finished!!

Submitted the same time. My timeline looks very similar to Nirak101, almost the same except the contact for the BI etc...

Nirak101... Looks good for you. There was a post in an earlier thread for expedited BIs it was right b/f a class. It is rumored that there is a class starting for Nov, but unconfirmed. The call could be right around the corner for you. Could only pray to get that class if I pass everything.

Waiting for the BI to get started. Having fun in the meantime and not sweating it.

dwf131- Good for you! I am sweating it now! My current work is contracted and I didn't expect to hear anything so soon so I let my contract renew. It's not impossible to get out of but I'll be "released with prejudice" for breaching my contract which is not really the way I want to go! Really it's all riding on THE CALL (and location).

Where does everyone want to be placed? My top 2 choices were Baltimore then Falls Church, VA.

Need some advice. I am currently a state investigator making about 50000 a year. I failed the ATF S/A TEA exam (most recent) given in NYC; but will be looking in a year for the next test. Today, 09/13/05, I for the IOI position at ATF. Also, I am deputized as a marshal with ATF to work in a task force with them I was informed that there are no positions in NY or NJ and to pick for other areas.

I have read your threads and realize ATF is a great place to work. I just want to know if it would be worth it for me, based on potential salary and earnings, to accept this position. If I stay with my state job I probably could make approx. 70000 (at max pay at retirement). I am 32 yrs old with a wife and 1 child (1 yr old); own a house, etc., etc. I know the ultimate decision is mine but am looking for some advice.

"Today, 09/13/05, I for the IOI position at ATF." Did you leave something out?

What did you qualify for GS7 or 9 or other?

GS7 -- 34,000 +/-
GS9 -- 43,000 +/-

Pay rates vary with location. Check out http://www.opm.gov/oca/05tables/index.asp

Pay will increase, as I was told, every year until you reach GS11. You will compete for GS13 positions based on need.

If pay is not an issue and you can uproot your family I would go for it. I am currently in the process and am considering all of my options.

IOI is non-sworn (I forget the exact terminology), no gun, just investigating/paperwork side of the house. Depending on location and workload you may travel. Current IOIs correct me if I am wrong.

It sounds like you have a good gig now. A question to ask yourself and your family: Why do you want to leave other than working for the Fed? A position in IOI does not generally mean that it is a stepping stone to a SA position in the future. If you have the time I would try the TEA exam again if SA is in your blood.

NIRAK

Chicago and Tennesse (west end offices). It does not matter where I go.

Current kink in the BI process that I am solving right now. I hope this doesn't prevent me, but its no sweat. I am very interested in the job, but if I get passed over there are other "fish" in the sea.

I may be incorrect. This information was from my interview (Mar 05) and from the various posts on this board.

ATF SAC
09-14-2005, 14:06
They come with so little notice that raises and grade increases seem to be automatic, they are not. They are contingent on you performing to a fully successful level at your current grade and step and your supervisor certifying it is so. The journeyman level for IOI is 12, so given that you are performing adequately you will proceed from where you start along a path that goes 5,7,9,11,12 year by year and then start moving up the steps 1 -10 until you retire, the journeyman grade is raised (was an 11 for IOI not so long ago) or you compete for a 13 position.

DWF.

Thanks for the input. "Today, 09/13/05, I (interviewed) for the IOI position at ATF," is what I meant to say.

I do have a good gig now, but am starting to get a little tired of it. Currently, I'm issued a weapon, get a car, am in charge of people but its getting a little boring. Think about a job that is totally mismanaged and micromanaged. Then multiply it by 100. I'm just gettting sick and tired of it and I still have 18 yrs to go (and I've been here 7 yrs). I'm looking for something different and more interesing and if the money is the same or better than I think I should leave. The S/A position is in my blood because of me being a police officer but at this point, I'll take similar money without the b.s.

Thanks again for your input.

Also, I wasn't informed about what grade I qualify for? I guess I should have asked.

Let me ask 1 more thing....u state a GS 7 makes 34000 and a GS 9 makes 43000 but when I look on the pay schedules hiring rate is much much less. Where are you coming up with these figures? Are you including geographic?

Thanks again just asking.

dwf131
09-14-2005, 20:57
I was going from my memory...so thats how that goes. I had looked up TN and Chicago locations a while back and was combining them. Sorry for the confusion about that.

The current IOIs who use this site can't say anything bad about the IOI position. If you think you might like that then go for it, you can't lose anything. Mis/Mircomanagement ebbs and flows. You may already be in a position to take a command promotion (if you desire).

As far as your qualifing grade you should (using this term loosely) have gotten a qualified letter from OPM citing what grade you qualified under. Do you remember of have a copy of your submitted application? That might shed some light on the issue.

Based on what I am reading, it appears that the standard time period between interview and receiving the BI packet is 4 months and then another month to six weeks to complete the BI.

Anyone get through the process sooner than this?

Also, what have been peoples experiences from the completion of the BI to the start date?

And one final question: If you successfully complete the BI process, will ATF definitely offer you the job?

Thanks!

One thing you have to remember is that the retired S/A doing your BI for the IOI position is the same one who has to do BIs on the S/A's also. So, depending on how many BI's they have to do, your waiting time may vary. My process took a total of 6 months from test date to hire date. My BI only took two days b/c ATF accepted the most recent TS clearance that I had from OPM and just did a quick update with my current employer at the time. The plan, as I think I've said before, is to hire approximately 200 more IOIs in FY06. That number is obviously subject to funding, but I think it will probably be pretty close. The job process as a whole is very short compared to how long the guys in the 1811 spots have to wait.

One thing that may help some of you is the end of the FY is approaching. My BI called me around September 22 and he was finished up by September 25th. Having money left over at the end of the year is not a good thing in the government. So, if you get a call here shortly, be prepared to do whatever the BI asks you to do. Unless of course, you want to wait a little bit longer. :)

Ok - this might seem a bit premature, but I'll throw it out there anyway. I did a search on this subject, but to no avail.

Couple questions about ATF IOI:

During FLETC training, is there a PT program or are you on your own? Do we have the same access to the gyms, etc., as anyone else at FLETC?

I've heard conflicting statements to the uniform policy - is an IOI required to wear a uniform on a daily basis??

Last, initially I heard training was 9 weeks, then 6 weeks, now I've read it's only 5 weeks - can someone please clarify??

If I've repeated questions already specifically answered, please forgive me - I appreciate any and all comments - as long as they're nice.... :D

PT is voluntary, meaning if you want to go to the gym or run on the trails you can. You have access to all of the facilities just like everyone else.

Are there uniforms? For explosives assignments there are. For firearms assignments, it depends on your Field Division policy. For explosives, you wear the BDUs (unless they are made of polyester), then you wear an ATF polo shirt with the Royal Robbins 5.11 pants. The office attire that you are required to wear depends on what office you are in. Jeans are not allowed in my office (FD) but all of the people in RAC offices wear jeans all the time.

The length of time you will spend at FLETC will probably be a little different than everyone else who has gone before you. The IOI over the program at FLETC (a former NOPD police officer) is a great guy and is really making needed changes to the curriculum. With that said, I know two groups that were down there in the last year and one was there for 7.5 weeks and one was there for about 6.5 weeks.

If you have any more questions specific to your situation, you can PM me. If you have more general questions, ask away and I will try to provide an answer so that everyone can benefit.

But you add re-location which is around 5G-6G which comes out to be 35G,43G, and 51G respectively. For a government job, that is not bad. More importantly, many people are probably willing to take less working for the FBI.

This may have already been posted so sorry for redundancy. The OPM site has pay tables. Depending on where you will be working, a GS-7 pay could vary greatly. On the site, scroll and look for the locale where you'll be working and you can see what the pay is for that geographical area.

Just an FYI- I spoke to an HR person in DC today who filled me in that alot of the locations that have a current need for IOI's are mid to west coast. There's not a huge need in the mid-Atlantic region. Also, another vacancy announcement is coming out in the next couple of weeks.

For all of you who don't make it into the November class, the next class will be in May. I am at FLETC right now and I finish next Thursday. I got the May date right from the mouth of the program manager down here. So for all of you who applied under the April announcement and haven't heard anything past the interview don't worry. It's too soon to start backgrounds for a May class. ATF is a small agency and the IOI position is in high demand after some changes to the law after the September 11th attacks. nationwide there are only about 600 IOIs. If you passed your interview and pass your upcoming BI you can pretty much count on being hired. I hope this helps for those of you waiting. If anyone has any questions about FLETC feel free to ask but it may be a week or so before I can get back with you.

Hey all,
For those who don't know a IOI annoucement opened up OCT 3 for GS-5/7
It, of course requires a ACWA exam, my question is, whats on the exam? all I could get out of the OPM website was reading and math and then the IAR exam portion were they ask you about what you have done. I can read just fine, I would just like to know what level of math they will be asking for. If its calculus im in big trouble.

The math portion is pretty basic math. It's not as hard as the math for the TEA exam.

First of all, since I am new here, hello to everybody. I have been thinking about becoming an ATF IOI for some time now (my father and grandfather were both ATF men), but I am getting a late start (I am 36 years old). Do any of you think that my age might make things more difficult for me? I am presuming that most applicants for IOI are younger than I am. I am particularly wondering about how it would impact the FLETC training. Does the IOI course have physical training requirements that would be rough on someone my age? I am remembering my army basic training, and thinking that I would not want to attempt anything like that again, at my age.

I was also thinking about the OPM written examination. I do not worry much about written tests, but I am curious if there might be any information about the nature of this particular test somewhere online. Does anyone know? Should one prepare for it, and if so, how?

I do have one question about the job itself. Realistically, how much travel (especially overnight) is it likely to entail? The reason I ask is that my father was an ATF SA, and I do not recall that he was away from home that often, nothing like the “11 or more nights per month” the job description warns about. Maybe SAs do not travel as much as IOIs do? In any case, I understand that there is no certainty about this. I am just looking for gut feelings, especially from any among you who have experience.

I hope I have not asked anything that has already been asked, and answered, elsewhere. I have found information about the position and the recruitment process, but much of it seems to be out of date, so I thought I would ask here, where there are people presently involved.

Thank you all, and the best of luck to all of you candidates and cadets.

Rolf

LukeAustin is right. There is nothing as advanced as calculus on the test. Items included analyzing tables and word problems from what I remember. There was also vocabulary and reading comprehension on there as well. I thought the reading comp. was harder- you had to carefully analyze very specific statements about the text. If you are scheduled to take the test, you'll get a little "study packet" in the mail with your test date.

Fair number of folks come in as IOI's in your age range, Rolf. ATF also has a history of warm fuzzies for "generational" applicants (Grandaddy, Daddy, Jr or Sis) unless you ruin the family name :) . I absolutely knew it was time to retire when there was a chance I was going to meet the great grandkid of somebody I had worked with.

There's not alot out there on the AWCA, but hasn't seemed to be a crusher the way TEA can be for the agents. There are apparently several parts of AWCA and I do not know what areas ATF uses for IOI's. Any of the folks here got a good recommendation on legit prep material?

Travel will probably be different depending on where you are. In the West where every other soul is a firearms licensee and there is 200 miles between neighbors, could be a bit. IOIs in Atlanta would go on the road for a day or two every couple of weeks with a briefcase full of work, but with IOI folks in Macon and Savannah it wasn't all that burdensome. In a fair number of places, you get some travel, sometimes have IOI folks who like it more and will take more if all are agreeable. Not particularly a road warrior job, but crime density may tend to keep agents more localized than the kind of places people can build explosive storage and manufacture facilities.

Nirak101
10-04-2005, 17:33
When you are scheduled to take the ACWA, you also receive a packet outlining the sections of the test with a few sample questions. I know GS-05/07 applicants take the ACWA, but I'm not sure about GS-09.

Hey Nab -

Arrived in St. Louis on Monday, office is located downtown, which I'm familiar with - however, I just received a call from my supervisor telling me I have to drive to the Kansas City Field Office to be sworn in - and it's on me to get there, yada, yada, yada.

Not a problem, but I sure wish they would have stated this on my letter of acceptance....I have to drive in on Sunday night in order to be there at 8am on Monday, the 17th. My sup said I can just go home after I get back into St. Louis, but damn, that's another 8 hours on the road. Hopefully there won't be any more surprises...

For those who are going to be in the Nov. 1 class - make sure you know where you will be required to be sworn in - it most likely will not be the office you think it is unless you're going to the Main Division Field Office.

Looking forward to maybe meeting you Nab - don't know where I'm going to be staying, but I guess I'll see you at the swearing in ceremony!

Stay safe.

Just a heads up for those of you in the process. We spoke with our DIO yesterday and he stated that ATF plans on hiring 100 more IOIs in 2006. If this holds true, and I don't know if this is counting the May class, but if it does, there will be at least two full classes at FLETC in 2006 so keep your heads up. We also received word that, at least in our FD, new IOIs will now be going to RAC offices to start filling those up. This is a good thing, except it means fewer hotel rewards points for me b/c I won't be staying in hotels quite as often. If anyone wants to PM me regarding info on RAC offices, I'll try to answer your questions.
