View Full Version : Types of service weapons
Hello all,
Just curious as to what some of you folks in other depts are carrying on your hips. My dept. here in New York recently transitioned to Smith & Wesson .45's the tactical service weapon from the Smith & Wesson 9mm model 6906.

:bounce: paterson p.d in new jersey carries the glock 40 cal
Beretta 92 DAO in 40 S&W 155 gr Speer Gold Dots. But we switching to that cheap, ugly, plastic gun :(
We use the S&W 4506.
Worse comes to worse,
you can drop it on the criminals foot.
Except that might be excessive use of force.

Big, heavy and works well.

Amtrak Police are authorized to carry the glock 22 or 23 .40 caliber pistol. Philly PD carries glock 17 9mm pistols. Both Philadelphia housing police and SEPTA carry a Smith and Wesson Pistol, Im unsure if its a .40 cal ( I belive it is but again unsure) or 9mm.
The Pennsylvania State Police carry a very large pistol, a .40 cal berretta which is issued to each trooper with their badge# and PSP logo on it.

Looks like the glock is as popular as I've heard it is. I have to admit, I like it myself. I own a model 19 for off duty/personal use.(9mm)

What about H&K's? And Sigs- I noticed only one person mention them. I didn't realize Glocks were so widely used- but then I'm not even a rookie yet :( What are your opinions of the H&K 45acp's?

Our Sheriff's Dept (Nassau Cty) uses both #17 & #19 Glock. Wish they would let me use my 1911.

Hey Fedagent,
I heard that the sig p-229 .357 is what the fam's are suppose to be carrying. Not sure if this is correct or not. Wondering if you know or not. Also I heard they are using a special hollow point, grooved aluminum slug. Just curious since there doesn't seem to be much out there. Thanks for any help.

We (Kenosha County WI S.O) are issued the S&W 4506. Or we can purchase our own pistol/mags and leather as long as the weapon meets certain criteria. Most of those guys are carrying glocks, HK's and a few Beretta's mostly in 40 and 45 caliber. The S&W's are dependable but are boat anchors.

Sig-Sauer P229, .40Cal, Double Action Only. Shooting 155 grain hollow points (INS Load) Sweetest pistol I've ever owned, will never give it up! I am also ordering a Heckler & Koch USP .40 Compact, with the INS Trigger group for off duty carry, about the same size as the Sig but what-the-hell, can't beat the price for a new toy, Uhm, I mean work tool! Personally I have become a convert and a big fan of DAO pistols. No safety or de-cocker to worry about. Just point and pull the trigger. Same consistant trigger pull every time. Very simple and consistant on target every shot. Very safe to carry, just take to finger off the trigger and re holster. Almost three years with BP and have never heard of nor seen anyone have an accidental discharge, not something I can say about working around Single Action or Double/Single Action pistols.
Glock 22 .40cal, 180gr Speer Gold Dots.
Neighboring agencies I can think of are carrying Beretta 96, Sig 229, S&W 4046TSW, all also in .40cal.

My State agency issues the Sig P-228 (although they're impossible to find & buy anymore, so when we have to replace them we'll get P-229's I guess). I personally carry a Glock model 30 as my daily concealed pistol. I love all of the Glocks (have a model 21 & model 19 as well - have had models 22,23 & 27 in the past). The State Highway Patrol issues Beretta's, which after seeing how they hold up under "rigorous" usage I would not carry one - plus the fact that they're a big gun to achive what can be achieved with something much more compact. (not trying to P.O. any of you Beretta fans out they're - just what I've personally observed!)

In the NYPD I use the S&W 5946 9MM. Also you have the choice of using the Glock 19 9MM. I wish I had picked it. Much better gun in my opinion.

I read that the Glock 22 is used in 80% of the U.S. police agencies, I think I saw that in Guns and Weapons for Law Enforcement.
Good weapon, I really like the idea that the full size mags can be used in the baby Glock of the same caliber should you need to transition over to your backup. They also can take a lot of abuse, they are hella cool! My neighbor likes his Glock 30 (baby .45 cal.)so much he bought vanity plates for his truck that reads...
:D GLOCK 30:D
Gotta love that!
I still like my Kimber High-Cap Polymer 1911 though, but then again it is almost double the price.
