Drug use

Good Day all!
I have applied to The Border Patrol, Immigration Inspector, and CHP. I have passed the written tests for all the above. I have yet to meet with the background investigator. In my past I have used marijuana 10 times. The first time began in 1986 in 9th grade(1 time that year). I used marijuana 6 times through out highscool (1986-1990). I also used it 2 times from the period of 1992-1993(One time in each year). 1994 I did not use it. The last time I used it was in 1996(one time). I know that this was very foolish. I attribute mu use to "just wanting to fit in" and being young and immature. I know that these are weak excuses. My question is this: What is the criteria (for the above carreers) concerning drug use? How much time is necessary to pass considering the last time of marijuana use. Any info. would be appreciated. I think your use would be looked at as acceptable if it would have ended in 1993. I think many agencies will question your decision to use again in 1996. It will look favorable that you have not used in 5 years, although many agencies will see 10 times as more than experimentation.

Most importantly is to be honest with your bg investigator.

I know you want answers bro, but there just aren't any solid answers anyone can give you. I don't think you've reached the point of being an automatic DQ, but really the only way to know what any particular department wants is to go through the process. How you fare with over the next few months will speak volumes. The more you have going for you (military w/honorable discharge, college degree, good credit, solid work history, etc.) the better off you'll be. Good luck.

All you can do is be honest with your BI and the Polygrapher when the time comes. My opinion is that this will be viewed as experimentation and will not cause an auto DQ with the last use being 5 years ago. However, it does depend on the agency you are applying for. Be honest and good luck to you!

I do not see this as an Auto DQ. If I were you I would sell MJ use as bad judgement that you wish you could undo. I would not emphasize "immaturaty and wanting to fit in" translation- suseptibility to peer pressure. Most hiring agencies will provide the answer to your main question in the list of minimum qualifications. If the information is not there, contact a recruiter or wait and ask the BI. $.02 Good luck!
