hello all this is my first time on your site, and I must say it is very well put together.

I also noticed you guys like all the info so here it is

Anyway, my discharge from the Marine corps(reserves) was an administrative discharge(within 180 days of service). Basically after I kicked my butt to get meritoriously promoted in combat training(which is after basic), only problem is they meritoriously promoted me to PFC(Which I already was). They said sorry for the mistake but your plane for MOS school leaves in 1 hour and we dont have time to change it. That was letting me know what laid ahead.
Next I got to my Mos school(stinger training) which was supposed to start the week we arrived, and we were told it would not start for 2 1/2 months(understand as most of you know being a reservist gives you way more civilian rights than a active person). After sitting there in fort bliss, tx for a month, we (the 4 or 5 reservists waiting for the school demanded we be sent to are reservive units because in are contract it stated the starting date of the school, thus breech of contract. They sent us all home then told me(and the others i guess they where not in my reserve unit) that later in the next year I would have to return for 3 months of schooling. I told them in no way would I uproot again and leave for 3 months. So at that point I stopped going. Talked to the commander a few times and they said they where going to other than honorable me. but after a few letters indicating i would fight it in court , i was administrative discharged. This is all there was no drugs no nothing...my contract in hand said Specific dates my school started they didn't honor that so I got discharged.
By the way this was 10 years ago and i know it is long but by reading the other threads everyone ask for more info so there it is...Do you think I can still get in to LE....
Thank you in advance
P.S. my discharge from active duty was Honorable.....The above is for my discharge from active reserves.

It is really hard to say. It will be up to the department that you're applying to. My opinion is that it will not be that difficult to overcome. I would just explain it like you did here to the BI when the time comes. Better yet, I would contact a recruiter from an agency you wish to apply to and see what he'she says. Good luck to you!

I agree with Dan. I think your honorable discharge from active duty will carry more weight. Those of us who have been active duty in the military & then gone into the guard or the reserves know that there are a few units out there that are ate up & do not have their sh*t together. I think some guard/reserve units are actually letting enlistees try it out for up to a year with the ability to quit for any reason now.

Based on your listed circumstances, you shouldn't have any problem. There's a distinct difference in classification of discharges and an administrative discharge isn't normally a problem. As long as the classification of service is considered "honorable", there's no problem! It's not uncommon that problems arise in the training process. Personally, it sounds like a blessing in disguise! Unfortunately, once you've signed the papers and moved on to the next step, the personal considerations become no longer present!

Have a great day!

An administrative discharge is a good thing to have. It is not a general discharge and there is not "under honorable, or dishonorable conditions".

I myself have had an administrative discharge. I was in DEP prior to being 18. Prior to leaving for basic training, my mother changed her mind and decided she did not want me to go. Told me I could sign back up once I turned 18. A simple letter and boom I got a packet with all my forms and an administrative sep. from the service.

I understand I had never attended basic, and most say you aren't really in until you arrive at basic and swear in that final time, (maybe DEP doesn't count). I have been told when I applied to departments they don't even consider the administrative sep as me ever being in the military positive or negative. It is a null issue. Even the military told me they would treat me as though I had never had any contact with the military if I were to sign back up. My recruiter was a grade a jerk about the whole thing, (and although I was going to sign back up) so I decided to not go back. Got hired by a PD at 18. So I think it was a blessing in disguise. Sometimes mom does know best?

I see your administrative discharge/sep as nothing. You should have no problems..

An administrative discharge isn't always a case of "it's as if you were never there". In the case of discharge from the DEP, you were never there. Time in the DEP counts towards pay, not time in service! Again, as always the seperation code is the key.

Have a great day!
