Hi everyone! I am posting these questions for my wife whom has had an interest in joining the CHP for some time now. I hope a BI can possibly answer them for us. There are a few matters of concern in my wife's mind that are bothering her. Here they are:

1). When she was about 12 years old she was babysitting a neighbor's kids. One day they started to mess around with some checks that the kids had found somewhere in the house. They were basically writing out fictional names and amounts, then signing them, and then they would rip them all up and throw them away. Well one day when the kid's father discovered that some of these checks were missing, he asked my wife about it, and she told him she didn't know nothing about it. It wasn't too smart of her, but then again she was only 12 years old.

2). At the age of 15 she had a job at a local malt shop, serving ice cream, sandwiches, etc. The malt shop was owned by the mother of some kids she went to school with. The owner's kids would sometime take some money from the cash register to buy stuff with. My wife told me that she too at one time took about $5.00 from the register. Well one day soon the owner noticed that there was about $86.00 missing from the day's cash register count. She confronted my wife about it and immediately accused her of taking the money. Of course she did not take the money, but she did know that the owner's kids took money from the register on a regular basis. My wife suspected that it was they who had tooken the money, but she didn't want to tell the owner anything about this because she felt that she would be ratting on her kids. She should have told her, but she was fired either way. So basically she took the fall for the owner's kids! That's too bad. When she gets in the background investigation some day, she is concerned that the BI will go and talk to her neighbor and the malt shop owner, for what I do not know. I keep telling her that as long as she discloses anything and tells the truth, that she has nothing to worry about. After all, all of this was when she was a child. She is now 25.

3). Lastly, about two weeks ago she was cited for breaking across the driving lane. She was driving down the road when she started to make a left-hand turn, then she realized that it wasn't the right street that was turning on, so she veered back onto the preceeding lane and continued on. Well a sheriff's deputy spotted her mistake from way back behind her and pulled her over. She was cited for basically driving on the other half of the lane, or breaking the lane illegally or something of that nature.

She has been cited for speeding before twice. Both have been taken care of of course. I believe she got one speeding ticket in 1996 and another in 1997. She has not had any at-fault accidents ever. She is due to take the CHP written this weekend. I know she'll pass is with flying colors and pass everything else in order to get to the BI. Can someone please help me to quell her fear of being DQd from the BI? Hopefully someone with experience in BIs can answer and/or advise on these questions. I myself am not in the CHP yet, but I need some expert opinions. I just keep telling her that when the time comes for the BI to just disclose anything and everything, and answer every question truthfully and she'll be OK. Thank you very much for taking the time to read this and to answer these concerns! Bye!

The CHP has been known to be very selective by some, while on the other hand there are those who say that they are a very forgiving department. I personally think they are very forgiving and from what I have been told by close relatives of mine(CHP officers), issues like these are not going to be automatic DQ's. The one I would worry about is that ticket she got two weeks ago. That will be an issue during the background investigation.
As for the past employer at the ice cream shop, they will be contacted. This possibly could be a problem but it happend at such a young age that it shouldn't pose a problem. I myself got into some trouble at a young age and had no problem during the background investigation. I was just honest about everything, which I suggest she do the same. What I suggest you do is this, call the recruitment office at border division: (858) 637-7158, ask to speak to officer Gustavo Guzman(recruiter) and ask him if these issues will be disqualifying or not. He will save her a lot of trouble, time, and heartache if it doesnt go through for her. He will let you know were you stand.
I personally feel that she has a great shot. Writing fake checks as a kid, is not what their looking for. As a matter of fact, they might even laugh at you for disclosing such a thing. Their looking to disqualify those who have a loose screw and have no respect for the law. Tell her to keep her head up and not to give up.
Good Luck,
Robert
