I was wondering if anyone has been through the NYS park police process. I recieved a letter that states that I need to be in Albany in the middle of Oct. to begin the process. Any information would be great!

Thanks in advance.

Gel8109,

The last I knew, and this was only a few years ago, as I have been out of the academy was that the park police to my knowledge are not associated with the State Police. At one point there was rumor that they would merge with the Troopers but it never materialized. I have several guys from my dept. that work with the Park Police on a part time basis during the summer. I'm assuming that you go to Albany to be processed. Once done there you would return to your local police academy and go through with the cities, towns, and villages in your locality. As I said, I know this was as of a few years ago, maybe things have changed. I doubt it though because they are not to my knowledge affiliated directly with the NYSP. Hope this helps you.

While they are still a separate entity, NYS Park Police do go through the NYSP Academy...I believe they may have their own program (separate from the Troopers), but their officers definitely go through the NYSP Academy. Major downside with this is that, like the NYSP, the academy is only residential M-F, so you need to find someplace to stay on weekends.

The process is similar to NYSP, you need to fill out an extensive background packet, go through the PT exam, oral board, medical, and BI. Good agency in my opinion--the officers I have known enjoyed the job--although like other NYS jobs, the pay is not all that great (on LI at least, there is a lot of OT available with concerts and other events).

They sent me a packet about a year ago from the 1996 test asking if I was still interested (tempting, but I declined because it would have been way too much of a pay cut for me).
