I work for TSA and I can easily stand for periods of 4 hours or more. The gym shoes I am currently wearing are starting to hurt to the piont where I am moving very slowly and deliberately (trying not to take extra steps). I know good folks with hard working feet can recomend something.

I don't know what the TSA uniform standards are, but if they are allowed you might want to consider a pair of duty boots which might provide more support then say a pair of gym shoes. There are many recent threads which cover duty boots.
I wear 8 inch danner strikers which I have comfortably stood in for 12 hours in hot weather.

Just a guess... but I bet they would even prefer duty boots to gym shoes just for professional appearance purposes.

At DCA you are allowed to wear any shoe as long it is 99% black.

I wear Red Wing's dress shoes. They are extremely comfortable and come in styles from wingtip to loafer.

For regular shoes, you might look for shoes from either Clarks or Ecco, both of which I've found offer more support than most other shoes out there. Of course, what works well for one person doesn't always work for someone else. If you can find a Walking Company store near you, they offer a lot of good shoes (including Ecco's) and inserts that may help.

I used to work in an airport as well, as a gate agent. Back in those days, I wore Deer Stags with SUPRO molded sole. I chose them after reading one of the reviews from a med student who wore them comfortably for 36-hour shifts. They only have a handful of styles with SUPRO, but a couple are dress shoes and a couple are casual walking, so either way you should find something that fits the uniform. We were prohibited by policy from sitting down at all during our shift, except for one 30-minute meal period, and I never had any pain during or after a 12-hour shift.

If it's duty boots you're looking for, I wear Bates Enforcers Ultra-Lites in my current (Ramp) job. Safety-toe, but non-metal so I can speed through the checkpoint.

IIRC, the Deer Stags ran about $50 and the Bates around $75.

Some agencys allow for black shoes as uniform shoes. I've seen officers wearing all black converses, I used to wear an older pair of Air Force Ones, (might as well be stylish and comfortable) The best bet is to check with a podiatrist to make sure your arches aren't the problem, and from there find a shoe that fits your foot. I'll also plug for the danner 8in strikers

Eccos are incredible shoe, esp. if you can get away with using their hiking boot (or lugsole oxford, same thing w/o the ankle support). Great value, because even though they're on the pricier side compared to some others, they last FOREVER.

Rockports are a good lower-cost alternative, but they won't last as long.

Mephistos are the absolute tops in quality and comfort for a 'comfort' (not a traditional dress, that is) shoe. But even though you can stand 18 hours a day in them, the $350+ price tag might force you to have a seat...

I have had several pairs of Duhman dress/casual shoes that I have just loved. They feel like an old pair of running shoes right out of the box (they are a division of New Balance) and wear well too. I have two pairs of their oxfords, a black and a brown pair, dressy enough for work and casual enough for jeans. You can find them online at Zappos, another highly recommended company.

HEy there, ATL TSA here... I have run the gammot.. Rockport, Nunn-Bush, Skeetchers, etc... nothing was as comfortable as my New Balance! I got a pair of solid black NB's, and there's no steel shank to alarm the WTMD when you go in to work. I am ashamed to say, but the Nunn-Bush had insoles w/ a gel pouch in the heel.. I blew the gel out of it within 2 weeks, without fail.. pissed me off, too. How does one pop a gel insert. I am sparing my pride to save you a few $$$$

A $30.00 or $40.00 pair of insoles to replace those which come with most footwear is an excellent investment.

When I get a new pair of shoes/sneakers/boots I take the factory insoles out and throw them away. Replace them with something that someone who has knowledge of feet recommends (specialty shoe store).
