I loved the Glock 19 and SIG 220 in 45 ACP.

Then they went to the Berretta and everybody yelled "fix!" Then they made a videotape about how good the Berretta was. They made the tape part of the transition training. We all watched it. Everybody shot it, everybody HATED it. But we had to shoot it and then we could do our 229's if we already had them.....

I got a SIG 229 DAO, which I still carry in retirement. Well built, 100% reliable in the 8+ years I've had it.

I liked the quality of the Glock, and also of the '220, and other than hating the Berretta, that's why I jumped at the 229 DAO when it was authorized as a POW alternate to the Berretta.

The H&K was offered just before I left, and I didn't need another weapon.

I never played with the new S&W's.

Side note. I remember I was in Salzburg in the early 90's, so I walked into a gun shop across the street from the hotel. I thought the Glocks would be cheap in Austria, but when I saw the high prices I told the guy what we paid in the US (converted to Schillings). He just about fell off his chair.

I guess you figured it out. I like SIG's.

I'm a self-admitted Glock convert having carried the .40 cal 22 and 23 for the last 4 1/2 years. You can't go wrong with the Sig either (I actually prefer the grip on a Sig).

I am a big fan of Sig

I like the Sig also, & from other people I know that own them, they have never experienced any problem with them. However, they have become a bit pricy.

As far as the Glock (I'm considering the 19), I've heard different stories --- from how remarkably accurate they are out of the box -- to how drastically long the trigger pull is. However, I'm sure there are personal pros & cons for every weapon produced.

Sig 226, glock, then Beretta in that order. Stay away from the S&W

I'm also partial to the Sig-Sauer. I have, in the past, shot and owned glocks (privately/not on duty), but I ended up selling the glocks and keeping the sig (s). Also, like FedRich said, the ergonomics on the sig are more pleasing (IMO).

Sigs and Glocks are what other makes are compared against for durability and reliability.

Personally, I hate Smith autos and Beretta autos. Love Smith revolvers and Beretta shotguns though . . .

Figure out what fits better in your hand and buy that. With the people that I've trained, Glocks are a little more of a "natural" pointer for most hand sizes as the the angle of the grip is just a little bit greater than that of the Sig which is more of a traditional, almost perpindicular to the barrel type design.

1) Glock 17 / 19
Like it! Duty issue 17 with 8lb trigger. Damn near shoot perfect qual score every time I slow my as* down on the range. Run a G23 off duty and if it falls overboard, oh well.... A well made firearm that goes bang everytime, hits where I am, without oweing the freakin bank.

2) Beretta (all 92 D or 8000 series)
Too big and too heavy. Trigger flat out sucks! Issued in the service and barely hit the side of a barn. Quite the spin off from the 1911A1 we had for boardings. Actually bought the Taurus copy for practice... that was a waste of money.

3) Sig Sauer (P225; P226; P229; P239)
Don't know anything about SIGS. Everyone I ever talked with give thumbs up! I'm too cheap to go and buy one (full family limits my fun tickets).

4) S&W (All 3rd Generation)
Too heavy and with the three stage trigger... that sucks a duck's behind. Ran the 4006 for a number of years CCW. Money would have been better spent buying Jim Jone's Juice.

Head out to a range that rents firearms and take them for a test drive.

Maybe I should too with the SIG....................................nahhhh!!

As the owner of several SIGs I'll throw my vote in for the Glock 19. It is just a much easier pistol to conceal and shoot. It is lighter and smaller that everything else you listed. When carrying concealed, especially against the skin or a light t-shirt having a pistol without grip screws to rust from perspiration or sharp edges is a nice feature, the Glock is just superior in that regard. The S&W doesn't get my vote because of the magazine eject/safety feature and poor construction quality (they do make the Berettas look good in comparison), the Berettas are just plain huge, the SIGs, although great to shoot, are big and heavy when conpared to the Glock. If this is a uniform gun that you'll be carrying off-duty too then the 19 just can't be beat.
Anyway now that we can talk you into .40 cal instead of 9mm?

They issue me a SIG 229. I own a 239. If bigamy were legal and I could find a place to put the ring, I'd marry either. The 239 disappears under an untucked T-shirt in the summer.

I've owned Glocks, and had no complaints.. I just prefer the SIGs (hand-to-weapon fit, etc.)

Beretta-- Sucks. It ate up my recoil spring twice and rusts like there is no tomorrow at the hint of moisture. Big, bulky, and UGLY to boot. I was happy to give it back.

Glock--Light, easy to shoot/clean. I have a personal problem with the 17/19 as I seem to constantly ride the slide lock and lock it up while shooting. Big hands I suppose. Nice gun though. I bought a G26 for secondary/off duty carry and I love it. I shoot well with it and it is very concealable. Best ffirearms investment I have ever made.

Sig--Great gun. We will eventually be replacing our G19's with them and I can't wait. They are solid, well built and can take a beating. My last Sig had over 15,000 rounds through it and it still shot like a dream.

HK--USP compact was a great gun. You couldn't do anything to hurt it. I recently shot a 96% on a qual course cold. Hadn't touched one in 2 years. Boy it was nice.

As far as the S&W, I have used my friends NYPD model and found it to be heavy and unwieldly. I did not care for it much.

These were just a few of the threads I found discussing the Glock 17. Doubtless there are many other threads out there for the other weapons on your list.

In the future, it might be better to use the search function, because you're essentially asking people to re-hash the same informtaion that's been discussed time and time again. Please read the rules of the board for details.
