Many officers carry Glock 21 (.45 cal) and also many others opt for the Glock 22/23 (.40 cal) semi auto pistols. The department allows 9mm, .40 cal, and .45 cal. The rumor is that the department is going to be issuing Glock 22 (.40 cal) as a standard issue. Right now, officers have to purchase their own Glocks. Thus far, department issue is still the 9mm Beretta 92.

Other authorized handguns are S&W .45 cal. if you elect to buy your own. Mind you, once you purchase a Glock or S&W, you have to sign up for and complete respective course taught by LAPD.

Taser and a beanbag shotgun is issued to officers prior to the beginning of the shift.

Many officers are also carrying the ASP in addition to their standard PR-24 batons.

Of course, we have asp's in the military. I didn't know if they carried those or the old nightsticks. I haven't been home to cali in a lot of years so I'm not sure what they wear. In the little town i'm stationed in, I think they carry the old nightsticks.

Ah, thanks for the clarification. I can't speak for LAPD but LASD doesn't issue ASPs, they issue side handle batons, but everyone buys their own collapsable baton. And yes, we carry AR-15s in the car.

Not authorized to carry HK's? Just wondering, I have one. Probably sell it if I can't carry it.

During my hiring process I was talking to a LASD who was trying to get hired by LAPD. He has been 5 years on the job, still in the jails. I almost applied for the LASD too but heard from a lot of guys on here that being stuck in the jail is a way of life. Was just wondering, what exactly gets you onto the street? Performance? who you know?

Usually, the less desireable station you put in for, the faster you get out. You can be on several stations' waiting lists, and if they are popular, you'll be on the list forever. If you put in for one of the faster stations, you can get out of jail sooner.

That plus people were stuck in jail for a long time because of the hiring freeze. Now that they're hiring like crazy again, people are spending a lot less time in jail.

It's becoming a much better dept to work for again now that there's money. You should check it out.

Thank you. Given the proper chance I will keep it an option.

NYPD has cops authorized to carry the 26" straight baton, the asp, the pr-24, AND the wooden batons (mounted). I'm authorized to carry the straight baton & the asp.

One of my best friends is in the NYPD academy right now. He said they trained him on the asp, but the pepper spray and tasers etc. were usually carried by sgts. Is this true or just academy misinformation??

In order to carry the ar-15 you need to go to UPR school and get certified..it is the hardest class that LAPD offers..1/4 pass..crazy
