View Full Version : When Classmates Fail Out ??

I'm just curious about how other department treat recruits when they fail out? Last week we lost 2 people in our first set of simulations. I have to say that for at least one of them I wasn't really surprised but the other guy blew me away. I realize that it is a process to "weed out" those who aren't capable of doing the job- but it sure sucks the way they are treated after. I thought that the next class day our TAC Staff would come and talk to us- but they didn't. For 11 weeks it's been "you're a team- stick together" ,blah blah- but then when you lose someone- it's like they just want you to close the gap around them- period. The other thing that kills me is that we have a recruit that should have failed her sims for soooooo many reasons- but she passed. I mean- it was the worst possible officer safety ever!! How does it happen?? I never thought this person would have made it more than 5 weeks. This person has so many injuries and doctors notes- "M. X- doesn't have to do this, or that"- don't get me wrong- I like this person- but it scares me to death to think that this person might be on the street with me someday!! Sorry for venting... So how does your department treat failed out recruits??

My Academy class here in the State of Washington started out with 31 and we graduated 17. We lost the last one on the day we took our final exam. It was tough - as she was the one with the most heart, but the weakest physically. Her department basically said "see ya", and that was it. We all knew she was marginal - we all worked to get her through it, but her department did nothing for her. True, she should not of been there in the first place, but we all thought she deserved a bit more than what she got.

My class started with around 45 and ended up with like 27. We still graduated alot of people who never should have. It is sad but you have to make the best of it. Try to help "these" people along because if you are stuck in the field with them you want them to LIKE YOU, if you know what I mean.

good luck all classes go through issues like this. Luckily most of these people weed themselves out.

...Lost two in Sims 1. All the sims are pretty tough, and The crime scene finals are pretty tough, also, but not as bad as the sims...I wouldn't let the fact that you lost a few bring you down...it will probably happen again....Also, i know the feeling of the subjectivity of the grading procedure, but that can be argued back and forth, and there's not an easy solution...

Glad to hear your academy is going so well... About losing people... if you remember, I didnt FAIL out of the SBRTC academy is San Mateo, but under weird conditions was "let go" from my sponsered dept. Anyways I moved back to Chico, CA where I went to school and went to a local CC that has an academy and have been here for 10/11 weeks now. We started with 43? and are now down to 34. Its rough when you lose people, especially in our class because they just call them right out and somebody has to bring there books etc. to them in the office and that is usually the last we see of them. Its pretty brutal.

As far as the person who passed and maybe shouldnt be, I dont know, but we have several people here who NEVER participate in PT and usually dont even have doctors notes, they just say this or that hurts I cant run today etc. Its really irritating, but I think of it this way.... you as a class try to be a team, but when it comes down to it, you're there for yourself, and whether they don't run as much or were marginal on a sim, doesnt effect you, you run to stay/get into shape etc and you should realize that it makes you as an individual, stronger. At least thats what I tell myself when I get pissed they arent participating :)

Good luck!

Relative: do you mean that the instructors just let them slide without medical authorization if they don't want to engage in PT? Geez...things really HAVE changed, and not for the better.
Remember this though: these people are just kidding themselves, espirit de corps aside. One day they're gonna find themselves in a situatio where they'll wish that they HAD run. It's not so much the running that counts, you won't be doing that much of it on the street anyway. It's the CONDITIONING of the cardiovascular system that WILL matter! I've read that you should run one mile for every 3 minutes of a fight. Past experience has proven that even THIS may not be enough.
While I'm at it...everyone has to remember to STAY in shape after graduation. Forget the junk food on midnights. Forget "rewarding" yourself with food after a tough shift. Go for the fruits & veggies - avoid processed sugar items as much as possible.
Take it from someone who's learned the hard way.
Be safe, eh!

I understand copletely JOBAY. We had the same thing. we lost weveral, and it was simply goodbye and these people are non-entities anymore. We also had one that should have never made it through, but did. She just got off FTO. Last week, she was transporting a prisoner and called her Sgt over the air saying she had to stop for gas. He told her she could not stop w/ the prisoner so she fires back that he'll have to calla wrecker to tow her car when it runs dry. He goes to meet her at the jail, she lets the prisoner out ofthe car and hasn't cuffed him right, so he has slipped the cuffs to the front. He jackrabbits and the Sgt, and the Lt who has now shown up, chase him down. She's on the radio the whole time screaming "officer in trouble." They tell her to shut up, they have the guy. She hands in her badge and gun, saying she doesn't have to take this shit. Now she's working in the telephone report unit while the Chief decides if he wants to keep her. Doesn't seem like too hard of a decision to me.

Then another of my classmates was asked to resign due to the fact that he is "too nice." The FTO also said he had some officer safety probs. I happen to know this FTO and he really shouldn't be in that capacity... he has no patience whatsoever with anyone, especially recruit officers. This recruit did have some confidence problems, but could have worked them out with a little more time according to other FTOs who are aware of the situation.

So anyway - a rambling response to you question. I agree that the persona non grata is harsh.

IL Lawman, I totally agree with you, and think its unfortunate that its so easy to "slip through" the academy these days... oh well, I try to keep a low profile while im there, dont say more than I have to and don't try and draw attention to myself, I study, do the best I can and just think about graduation :)
