Our firearms training group has submitted a proposal to allow officers to utilize pistol-mounted lights. The officers with lightmounts would undergo additional training and qualification. Officers would also be required to use a holster that accomodates the pistol with light attached.
Because the budget won't support department-wide purchase, we proposed that officers who want pistol-mounted lights purchase the lightmount and holster from their uniform allowance. Our chief is wrapped around the axle on this issue. He has stated that if the firearms trainers believe that a lightmount is so important, then every officer should have one. Conversely, if everyone doesn't have a light, then no one will have one. (I'm a little unclear on the logic there, so don't bother asking....)
All this said, I have been asked to compile a list of departments that authorize pistol-mounted lights, but do not mandate them. Please post or, if you prefer, PM me with any details. Thanks and be safe.
