Man Arrested for Assaulting a U.S. Customs Officer at Tecate Port
Tecate, Calif. -- A 34-year-old Escondido man is in custody today after allegedly assaulting a U.S. Customs Service inspector at the Tecate border station last night, officials said.
According to port officials, passenger Keith Parris Ryg jumped from a private vehicle as it entered the U.S. at about 10:40 p.m. and shouted that a man had a gun and was going to shoot him.
A Customs inspector ran to Ryg to stop him but was pushed to the ground and struck his head on the pavement. During a scuffle Ryg grabbed the inspector's service weapon. A nearby Immigration and Naturalization Service inspector struck Ryg with her baton, causing the weapon to fly from Ryg's hand.
With the aid of another responding U.S. Customs inspector, the three officers were able to subdue and handcuff Ryg.
Local fire department paramedics were summoned and subsequently determined that the injured U.S. Customs inspector required transport by helicopter to an area hospital for observation due to his head injuries. The inspector was treated at the hospital and released at 2:15 a.m.
Ryg, suspected by officers of being under the influence of an unknown intoxicant, was transported under guard by ambulance to another area hospital for evaluation.
Customs special agents arrested Ryg after the U.S. Attorney's office accepted the case for federal prosecution. He will be charged with assaulting, resisting or impeding a federal officer.
The driver of the California-registered vehicle was not charged and was released.
