Just curious who here carries a 1911. What model do you have and how do you like it. Im going to be getting either a Kimber or a Springfield TRP butI cant decide. I think the biggest thing will be getting used to the safety and only having 8 rds but thats what practice is for I guess.

I don't carry one on duty, but I own about a half dozen. Everything from Colt Gold Cup's to a Remington Rand. Not to impressed with new manufacture, the Gold Cup is the newest and it's a Series 70. Although the new ones are well made, I just kind of like the old school a little better. I am impressed with the Kimbers, but again I don't own one.

I carry a Kimber Pro-Carry, alloy frame. The only modification to the gun was a minor trigger & feed ramp "job" that consisted of minor polishing by my friend who is a master gunsmith. Even before the minor work, this gun was the most accurate "straight out of the box" gun that I have ever owned ! I have previously owned: S&W 4513 (too small for my hands), Sig 220 (beat to hell), EAA Witness-P in .45 cal (ok, but not the best quality finish & workmanship) and I also had one of the previously mentioned Remington-Rand Pistols ("arsenal refinished"). The Kimber was and is the best .45 pistol that I own, bar none. I know several people that have owned Colt .45's :2gun: (70 & 80 series) that have dumped them in favor of a Kimber. Something to think about...... :2gun:
I'm a HUGE 1911 fan and early in my career, I carried several, including a Swenson modified Colt Govt Model and a Chow modified Colt Commander in Satin Nickel. My current IDPA shooter is a Springfield TRP and I've recently ordered a Les Baer Commander Length Kobra.

Like I have said before, a lot has happened with handgun technology since Teddy Roosevelt was President. I'll take a modern HK or SIG .40 over any .45 1911 variant, anyday.

What's up with the 1911 hating? I like the guns, I also like Browning Hi-Powers, as for the weapons themselves the caliber is what matters. The 40 is fine as is the 45. Both better than the 9 for transfer of kinetic energy to the target. Now, lets talk cyclic rate. . .the Germans had it figured out with the 9, the 40 and 45 are still slower. But that is neither here nor there. Your precious Sigs wouldn't exist, were it not for the designs of John Browning and the 1901 and 1911's.
TT
P.S. I have Sigs and Hk's as well. So I show no favorites, just like the simplicity and the lines of the 1911's.

Don't get me wrong, I am still looking to add a 1911 to the collection, a Mil-Spec Auto Ord (I'd prefer a Remington-Rand, like I was issued back in the day) in WWI/WWII configuration but as a duty weapon and as primary defense weapon the 1911's days have come and gone. Even John Browning admitted that the 1935 was a better design than the 1911, he was perfecting the ultimate auto pistol up until the day he died. The 1911 was just his first mass produced design that caught on in the market. It is heavy, only holds seven rounds, doesn't like to be dirty, in original issued configuration not very accurate, and they rust like there is no tomorrow. Sure, a gazillion companies make a plastic/stainless/aluminium/highcap/etc. version of the 1911 but the fundamental design is just past its prime, the reason that everyone and their brother manufactures a version is that all of the patents have long since expired. We don't shoot .45 Long Colt out of single action Peacemaker revolvers anymore for a reason, even though they are fine handguns, time has passed them by, the same is true of .45 and the 1911. When was the last time you saw a Tommy gun in an arms issue room? There is a lot to be said for smaller, lighter, hi-capacity handguns with half as many parts that don't oxidize like the more modern handguns we have now. 100 years is just a very long time in terms of weapons development and a lot has happened since the turn of the last century.

Was it difficult having to transition to the safety. After using a glock for 4 years i might have to spend some timein front of the tv flicking it on and off.

If you are going to carry a 1911 (or any single-action variant pistol), I highly recommend carrying ONLY that style of pistol. Much like an HKP7 series, it has a very specific manual-of-arms and switching back and forth to a Glock could end up screwing you up when you need it most.

1 In the beginning was the 1911, and the 1911 was THE pistol, and it was good. And behold the Lord said, thou shalt not muck with my disciple John's design for it is good and it workith. For John made the 1911, and lo all of his weapons, from the designs which I, the Lord, gave him upon the mountain.
2 And shouldst thou muck with it, and hang all manner of foul implements upon it, and profane its internal parts, thou shalt surely have malfunctions, and in the midst of battle thou shalt surely come to harm.
3 And as the ages passed men in their ignorance and arrogance didst forget the word of the Lord and began to profane the 1911. The tribe of the gamesman did place recoil spring guides and extended slide releases upon the 1911 and their metal smiths didst tighten the tolerances and alter parts to their liking, their clearness of mind being clouded by lust.
4 Their artisans did hang all manner of foul implements upon the 1911 and did so alter it that it became impractical to purchase. For lo, the artisans didst charge a great tax upon the purchasers of the 1911 so that the lowly field worker could not afford one. And the profaning of the internal parts didst render it unworkable when the dust of the land fell upon it.
5 And lo, they didst install adjustable sights, which are an abomination unto the Lord. For they doth break and lose their zero when thou dost need true aim. And those who have done so will be slain in great numbers by their enemies in the great battle. a
6 And it came to pass that the Lord didst see the abomination wrought by man and didst cause, as he had warned, fearful malfunctions to come upon the abominations and upon the artisans who thought they could do no wrong.
7 Seeing the malfunctions and the confusion of men, the lord of the underworld did see an opportunity to further ensnare man and didst bring forth pistols made of plastic, whose form was such that they looked and felt like a brick, yet the eyes of man being clouded, they were consumed by the plastic pistol and did buy vast quantities of them.
8 And being a deceitful spirit the lord of the underworld did make these plastic pistols unamenable to the artisans of earth and they were unable to muck much with the design, and lo these pistols did appear to function.
9 And the evil one also brought forth pistols in which the trigger didst both cock and fire them and which require a "dingus" to make them appear safe.
10 But man being stupid did not understand these new pistols and didst proceed to shoot themselves with the plastic pistol and with the trigger cocking pistols for lo their manual of arms required great intelligence which man had long since forsaken. Yet man continue to gloat over these new pistols blaming evil forces for the negligent discharges which they themselves had committed.
11 And when man had been totally ensnared with the plastic pistol, the lord of the underworld didst cause a plague of the terrible Ka-Boom to descend upon man and the plastic pistols delivered their retribution upon men. And there was a great wailing and gnashing of teeth in the land.
12 Then seeing that the eyes of man were slowly being opened and that man was truly sorrowful for his sinful misdeeds, the Lord did send his messengers in the form of artisans who did hear and obey the teachings of the prophet and who didst restore the profaned 1911s to their proper configuration, and lo, to the amazement of men they didst begin to work as the prophet had intended.
13 And the men of the land didst drive out the charlatans and profaners from the land, and there was joy and peace in the land, except for the evil sprits which tried occasionally to prey on the men and women of the land and who were sent to the place of eternal damnation b by the followers of John.

a Several old manuscripts add the following text. "And they [also rendered as "these men"] didst chamber it for cartridges who's calibers startith with numbers less than the Holy Number 4. And lo the Lord did cause great grief amongst these men when their enemies who were struck in battle with these lesser numbers didst not fall but did continue to cause great harm."

My chinese Norinco 1911 is the most reliable pistol I have ever owned. I have owned everything from cheap Ravens to Glocks to HK's. It has shoots complete circles around everything I have ever owned. It rattles, couldn't care less if its clean or dirty, or what type of ammunition I run thru it. Plus it will be more accurate then I will every be. It has NEVER EVER failed and last count it was pushing 8k rounds thru it. The 1911 is making a come back (did it really every go away?) and in my humble opinion it is the greatest combat handgun to date BUT it is not for everyone!

Can I send a copy of this to my superiors? ....

Lupey,
I almost laughed myself out of my chair. Thanks for brightening my morning. The sentence "for lo their manual of arms required great intelligence which man had long since forsaken" is funniest thing I have read in a long time and applies to so many moe things than pistols.
Stay safe,
Ken
