View Full Version : Concealed Firearms Permit (Georgia-Colorado)
I was wondering if anyone knew if Colorado recognizes Georgia’s concealed firearms permit. I have plans on moving to Colorado in the near future once a separate from the military. As it stands, I currently hold a Georgia concealed firearms permit. I was wondering if that would be valid in Colorado or not. I would appreciate any replies.
Thank You

Looks like the answer is yes, according to the CBI website:

It's not clear from Colorado's legislation, whether your permit will be valid once you cease to be a resident of Georgia and become a resident of Colorado.
As an aside, however, asking folks on the Internet is not the best idea when it's an issue that can mean jail or freedom.

Thank you for the reply, I do appreciate it. I was definitely going to Verify with the State of Colorado before I carry there to see if they honor Georgia’s permit. I was going to wait until I go back there and stop in a Sheriffs Office to ask but that will not be until I get back from a deployment that I am getting ready to leave for.
My plan is to self sponsor myself through a academy in Colorado in the hopes of landing a job as a Police Officer or Deputy Sheriff. Getting arrested for illegally carrying a handgun would pretty much end that dream.
Thanks Again.
I believe once you move there your other states license becomes null and void. Since you no longer reside in the state that issued the permit it is no longer good.

It appears that there is no reciprocity between GA and CO.
In addition, GA has no provisons for issuing CCW to nonresidents, preferring to rely on reciprocity. This being the case, the safest thing to assume is that your GA CCW would become invalid once you established your domicle in CO.
CO does not issue CCW to nonresidents, so you apparently cannot begin the process until you have established domicile there.
Also, for future reference, the website www.packing.org has a lot of great information when it comes to individual states' rules and regs regarding the issuing of CCW's and reciprocity. Since it is not an official .gov website, it would still be prudent to verify the information with the issuing authority however. HTH.

Not true.. :) I was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon and I have had 2 job offers. I finished all the testing and I just received my final job offer with a large Georgia dept.
A few things come to mind:
1 - I went to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation's CCW site, and it says they have reciprocity with Georgia (http://cbi.state.co.us/ccw/reciprocity.asp).
2 - The second you get your Colorado driver's license, you're no longer a GA resident (and the Gerogia CCW permit is null & void). However, in Florida, we issue permits to just about anyone, including non-residents. I know many people who have gotten a FL permit and carried on it because it was easier than getting their own state's permit (however, a non-resident FL CCW permit is not valid in Michigan, New Hampshire, and possibly Alabama - see http://licgweb.doacs.state.fl.us/news/concealed_carry.html)
Just a word of caution: I would certainly check with state officials before acting.

My bad. Misread the map.
Reciprocity is good, if you go to CO to get the forms while you are a resident of GA.

Not weapons related, but as an FYI. If you self sponsor yourself through an academy in CO, your POST is only good for 1 year, unless you get a job as a certified LE or Reserve. I recommend trying out for an agency that will pay your way. Denver PD comes to mind.
Thanks for the input, that is something I didn’t know. I was under the impression that your certification was good for up to four years but apparently I was wrong. I have been thinking about Denver allot, It’s definitely somewhere that I would like to work. Does anyone know how competitive the Denver PD hiring process is? In addition, I was also wondering if they offer veterans preference points? The reason I was leaning more toward self sponsoring myself through the academy was because I was told it is very difficult to get a LE job in Colorado without already being sponsored.
Any replies are appreciated
