DETROIT (AP) — A federal agent and a gunman were shot Friday in the office building housing the FBI, police
said.
Their conditions were not immediately known.
A witness, Joel Vander Linden of Warren, said he was waiting in line at the metal detectors at the McNamara
federal office building when he heard a man behind him ``complaining loudly ... cussing.''
Vander Linden said as he going to the elevators, he heard a ``boom,'' but was rushed out the door before he
could see anything else.
Another witness, Henry Verner, said he heard three or four shots and people yelling.
``There was a lot of unrest and people were scurrying to protect themselves,'' he said. He said he later saw
someone lying on the floor who was shot, but couldn't describe the person.
The agent was taken by ambulance to Detroit Receiving Hospital.
A second man, apparently the shooting suspect, was taken out of the building on a stretcher with his neck in
a brace and a pile of bandages on his abdomen.
An ambulance left under police escort to an undisclosed hospital. The area was cordoned off with police tape.
The shooting occurred two blocks from the federal courthouse where a hearing was held earlier in the day
for three men arrested in Detroit during the FBI investigation of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
A U.S. magistrate ordered the three detained, saying they presented a flight risk.

It is amazing to note that FPS officers are not considered law enforcement under the 6c provisions.
From the ODMP website.....
Officer Sheffield was shot and killed while manning a metal detector at the McNamara Federal Building in Detroit, Michigan. Security at the building had been increased dramatically in the wake of the terrorist attacks in New York City and the Pentagon. The suspect, who had been waiting in line to go through the security area, pulled a .357 caliber handgun from his bag when Officer Sheffield attempted to search it. Other officers returned fire and wound the suspect before taking him into custody. The building housed several federal law enforcement agencies.

I was in the building today, and security appeared about the same as usual. Every person I spoke to who works in the building is concerned for their safety. My guess is that most people who work in a large federal building are also concerned.
The officer was buried yesterday.

DETROIT-- Family and friends said goodbye Wednesday morning to Ronald Sheffield, a federal protective services officer.
The funeral was held at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Birmingham. Hundreds of police officers from across the country came to pay their respects.
Sheffield, 36, was shot to death last week at the McNamara Federal Building in Detroit.
Investigators said that David Daniel Serra, 28, came into the building with a gun. Sheffield reportedly told Serra that he could not have the weapon inside the building and that is when the suspect shot Sheffield.
Sheffield later died at a Detroit hospital. Serra was wounded and captured.
Sheffield had been an officer with Federal Protective Service since Feb. 15, 1998. He was a police officer at Veterans Affairs Hospital in metro Detroit from 1991-1998 and was in the military police of the United States Marine Corps.
Sheffield was the father of two daughters. He is also survived by a brother and three sisters. His family has asked that donations be sent to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.
