Where is the warrior spirit? Has the outrage subsided? As a former US Marine, I say let's get it on. I'm 34 and hope that the President calls up all males 18 - 35. I'm in. Am I the only one here that is packed?

Outrage should not be a substitute for intelligence. I am all for going after the responsible terrorists--at all levels of their various organizations--but it is not so cut and dry as sending in ground troops. We need to back up our words, and maintain our commitment to a war on terrorism for the long haul, but we need to do so intelligently. This is a war that will--and in my opinion, should--be fought more by our intelligence and special operations communities, than by our conventional forces. There are numerous terror groups out there, with cells in numerous countries, and we need to target not just the leadership of one organization, but also those cells and their members and supporters. Committing our troops to a 'conventional' war may be necessary to achieve certain elements of the war on terror, but this effort will not be won simply (or even in significant part) by means of conventional military might. The 'outrage' you mention is certainly there, but we need to act in a manner that best protects our country and effectively targets those who would attack us.

I concur with a lot of what you said. As with any war, troops must take and occupy ground. Unconventional methods have their place, and this is it. Congress needs to take the responsible steps to rescind President Ford's Executive Order that forbids assasination of heads of state. This will be the next greatest generation. How can any responsible able bodied American male not want to take part. This is the biggest defense to our way of life, Ever. My children deserve to grow up, and live free.

Go to www.usmc.mil

There is a form for Reserve, etc to fill out if they want to be recalled. I am a Marine Sgt (former active, now reserve), and I have been calling all the people I know to find out how to get into a forward unit, intel, or my old MP unit at Camp Lejuene.

I have several applications in for depts. and even sent in one yesterday for the FAA Air Marshal program. The only thing is I just can't seem to justify sitting on my butt in my office waiting for calls maybe 6 months down the road. (And they could be a calls saying I am DQed, etc.)

My old SRT team leader was recalled to the Gulf war just before he was set to enter the LAPD academy. He went to the Gulf and ended up staying in the Corps as a criminal investigator, and was absorbed into NCIS as an 1811 several years ago. (NCIS has a some slots for active Marine CID to become agents).

So maybe it will turn out well if I get recalled??!! I still can run a first class PFT!!

Once a Marine always a Marine!!

God bless you Les!!

I'm one of your brothers and I feel the same way. If I don't get on with the G then it's time to rock-n-roll. It's hard to control that urge to deploy to a strange land and kill exotic people. Especially these bastards. But keep in mind that the war is HERE now. Being a Marine is serving your country and we don't have to be in the Corps to do that. Focus your fury in a positive direction. We'll get our chance!

As long as there are people ready to volinteer to defend and die if necessary; there are warriors. They may be Marines, Airborne, Rangers, Special Forces or Seals, there all warriors. If I were your age I would re-up in the Corps in a heartbeat. But I am not. So I will do what I can to defend our borders. My hope is the same as yours. To, once again, be given the opportunity to kick ass and take names in the defense of our country.

We Still have a great country because we still have warriors.

I'm not trying to stop anyone's drive to get in the mix. It's just food for thought.

When we are on the brink of war or war begins everyone wants to be in it, but when they get there and reality slaps them in the face, they want to go home.

I am also a 34-year-old former Marine grunt, and I also don't like the idea of being on the sidelines.

However, it's probably a moot point - I am a Federal agent in a single-agent duty station, so I will probably not be allowed to go back in by my agency, anyway (also, I would probably not be able to pay my mortgage with what I would get from the Corps, even if they gave me my sergeant's stripes back - ha, ha!).

This is not an issue of pay, however, because there are always ways to make things work out financially. It IS an issue, however, of the importance of one's current role. If you are a law enforcement officer, you will be needed just as much in your current capacity (if not more) than you will be needed back in the military. You now have a much more specialized skill that will be even more in demand if we have to wage a war against terrorism, both abroad AND at home. These 18-21 year-old Marines filling the ranks of our beloved Corps. are trained and ready, so they are obviously the best men for the job right now (this all may not apply, of course, if we need more troops than our current troop levels can provide...).

Also, what's to say that if you DO go back in, that you'll get in a unit that's actually going to DO something? With my luck, I'd end up in Okie or K-Bay, practicing jungle ops! And I would definitely NOT go back in just so that I could sit on my ass at Camp Pendleton.

Because of my situation, I have had to stand down on the idea of going back in - I would encourage other LE officers to do the same, mainly because you'll be needed here. No, it's not as glamorous, but often just as necessary.

my opinion, anyway

Relax guys. We've (veterans) all been there and some of us missed our turn to fight. Though, just like we were standing tall and ready to take the battle to the enemy, there are good soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines that have taken our place, standing at the ready. They recieved the call that few of us ever had to take. Just as they do it now, we would have gladly gone and done our duty with pride and professionalism. Likewise, our time has become their time, and we have a different mission. For some of us, it's keeping our economy strong and protecting our families, and the family of the friend that went to fight. For some of us, our fight is to keep the public peace, protect the nation at home, and set an example for our sons to follow. I know you want to fight, I felt that urge to go back too. It's not our time now, it's that of our little brothers and sisters. If we all go away, who is going to be left to show pride in our accomplishments? That is what our job is now, for those of us who went before, we are who the young fighting men and women of today will look towards when they return; we are THE ONLY ones who will understand what they went through for the country we love.

gentelmen,

i agree with all of you in part but believe me when i say that its true you will be needed here in your current assignments more than you will be in the Corps. no job i know has a HERO billet so you have to do your best where you are at. as for me i still havent gotten into Grand Rapids PD yet so i called my prior service recruiter and from what he says ill be in as of 1 oct. i trust all of you doing your jobs trust me and the other Active/Reserve Marines to do ours. God bless you all and Semper Fi MAC

krellum makes a good argument about the chances of getting into a combat unit. That would really suck to stay in Pendleton. Even though I've only been to Hawaii once, and liked it, I wouldn't want to spend a war there. When we (1/1) returned to Camp Pendleton after Desert Storm, our barraks were overfull with guys that wanted in on the action. Needless to say, they missed out. Brassf, that's a freaking cool call sign.
