Since a few of you on this board have experience as a 97B or other type of MI job, I have a few questions:

1. Which positions are considered the best to have, are EAC (Strategic) Intel assignments nicer and more interesting than EBC (Tactical)

2. How are the Commissioned Officer jobs in MI? I know all 2LT Officers start out as AOC(Officer version of MOS) 35D(All-Source Intel) or are assigned to S-2 jobs, but what are the Officer jobs like for those in AOC 35E (CI) or 35F(HUMINT)

3. A couple times over the past week, I've heard mention of the Defense HUMINT(Human Intel) Service, a part of DIA...What exactly is that?

4. For Officers in CI, do they conduct their own investigations or act mainly as supervisors? Do they work mainly at the EAC or EBC level?

I was a 97B and worked in the National Capital Region MI Detachment (strategic). It's part of the 902d MI Group, which is headquartered at Ft. Meade, MD. The job was great for the warrant officers and enlisted (us "grunts") because we got to do all the work, which in a field unit can really suck (digging fox holes, ect.), but in our unit the grunt work was the best. No uniform either. Our detachment commander didn't get a chance to do very much investigative stuff. That's not to say, however, commissioned officers don't get to do anything interesting in the CI/Intell. field because they do. There are plenty of opportunities in the CI/Intell. field for everybody. There are just more opportunities for enlisted in terms of doing actual hands on work (surveillance, interviews, providing security/counter-terrorism briefings, ect.). That's about as specific as I'm comfortable in getting.

As far as working a tactical assignment in the CI field I wouldn't recommend it. The stuff I did as a 97B was all EAC and ALL of it was real world stuff. In a tactical environment you'll spend most of your time training. I don't know where a bulk of the enlisted and officer slots are (EAC vs. EBC). I think you have a better chance at being at an EBC assignment whether you're an officer or not. Sometimes it's just luck of the draw.

As far as your DIA question is concerned I'm not exactly sure what you're asking, but human intelligence is a fancy word for spy. Does the DIA have any? Don't know, that's classified. :D

There are many different intelligence disciplines, but human intelligence is what gets a lot of the attention in movies, ect. You know, the James Bond type shows. It's also, in my opinion, the most interesting, BY FAR! 97B is your best bet if you're interested in working any kind of HUMINT mission. The only reason I didn't stay was because of the constant moving. The pay sucked too. But the work was great.
