For the past three years I have had a huge interest in Law Enforcement. I have always been driven to get my college degree. I will have a computer information systems degree in one year. I am 21 now, but 22 by the end of the year. My question is this. What can I do now to make myself more competitive? A have wanted to be Texas State Trooper, and have even talked to corporal Applewhite, (recruiter). Is there any agency that I can really use my computer degree? (being federal, state, or local) As far as my qualifications, I have never been in trouble, very few traffic tickets (2 since i was 16) never did any drugs. I have not work experience, but I have held high offices with my fraternity (Kappa Alpha Order)
I woudl appreciate any advice, thanks.

I think you would have a good chance of getting on in Texas. You're at least qualified to give it a good shot. I didn't have any experience either before I got hired, and I think some agencies prefer it that way.

I know that a lot of local, state, and federal law enforcement organizations have computer crimes divisions. Maybe that would be something to consider.

calytrack,

If Texas DPS is the agency that you want a career with and if they don't have any LE experience requirement to apply, I would suggest taking the exam the next time it is offered.

Sometimes departments prefer that you have little or no prior LE experience; because they would like to train you THEIR way and not have to de-program something that another agency may have taught you.

Your college degree shows that you have discipline & can commit and complete a task you set out to achieve. Sometimes people try to over-qualify themselves before applying. If the timing is right for you..Why not?

Many people have to apply more than once to get the department of their choice. As for your computer degree, I think if you want a State Police Trooper position, you're going to have to spend your time on the road first, like everyone does. But I know most all major agencies now have a computer crimes unit that investigates computer/internet related fraud, child porn, threats, you name it. I know our VSP agent loves his job because he loves the technical side of computers and being a cop besides.

Give it some thought and go by Cpl Applewhite's advice too (since he works for DPS) if he gave you any. Good luck.
