PHILADELPHIA - September 25, 2001 —
A man has been arrested at Philadelphia International Airport after he successfully smuggled four box cutters past guards and metal detectors. Authorities say Dennis Knaus of Malvern told them he slipped the cutters past supposedly heavy security to prove to his wife that it was not safe to fly.
According to officials, Malvern got all the way to an airport gate, then showed them to an airline employee.
At that point he was taken into custody by police and turned over to the FBI. Knaus now faces criminal charges.
FBI agent Edward Gallant said Knaus told police that his wife was planning to fly to Ireland, and that he had been trying to talk her out of going.
Knaus added that it wasn't the first time that he had brought box cutters on a plane since the September 11th terrorist attacks. Police say Knaus told them he accidentally brought four box cutters onto a flight from Duluth, Minnesota to Philadelphia on September 15th.
The FAA banned all types of knives in airports after terrorists used box cutters to hijack four planes.
