View Full Version : College and the NYSP
I am a senior in college in my fall semester. I have 33 credits or eleven classes to go. I dont want to rush and finish when I could get hired by the NYSP and let them pay for shool while I work. I am on track right now for a Feb PAT and July academy if everything goes good. After the academy could I take the last remaing classes at my four year school while I work as a trooper? I need to take them at this paticular school Siena College because I have already transfered the max # of credits in. Will they let me finish at this school or do they put you on a rotating shift example 2 weeks nights 2 weeks days. A shift like this would not not allow me to hold down a regualr class schedule. I couldnt work days one week while I miss a 12noon class untill I go back on nights. I hope I have explained my situation and I know what I want so dont try talking me into finishing school when I have a chance to do bothe school and work lol. Thanks for any help
Fred, Do you have 2 years active duty military? Reason I am asking is because you need 60 credit hours unless you have the 2 years military, then you only need 30. Some guys I processed with didn't have the requirement filled and were told they could defer processing until they were finished. Also, After you get out of the academy, you will probably not be stationed up here. Most likely down south of poukeepsie. It would be hard to commute to Sienna if you work down there, wouldn't it?
I have an AAS in Criminal Justicegraduated with that last year. And I am 2 semesters short of my BA in Political Science one semester after I finish this fall semester which is in progress. I have heard from many different people that they allow you specail consideration in troop assignments. For example I heard a guy was placed in Troop G right out of the acdemy becuse he had recently bought a house.
"I heard a guy was placed in Troop G right out of the acdemy becuse he had recently bought a house."
I'll have to keep that in mind.;)
Good luck Fred.
Fred,
You are in a tough spot man. I know when I went through the process for the NYSP they said most rookies started down in NYC, or troop T (Thruway). They also rotate shifts which would make it hard to hold down a class schedule. So, SP20 is right when he talks about the commuting part. I know a couple of Troopers, and They do rotate you, I believe its every two or three weeks and they have been trying a pilot program with guys in troop G working 12 hour days. You have a tough decision to make. Also, you still have this and next semester to knock down some more credits. I know one thing for sure, I would stay in school if given the opportunity to defer my appointment, especially if I knew for sure I had made it through the process and the rest was a formality. I can tell you from experience, trying to work and go to school is not easy. I have been wanting to go back and get my master's degree, but I just can't find the time right now. Wish I had gotten it when I had the chance. Just my feelings. Good Luck. And remember, if you get hired by the NYSP, you have to fit your schedule around theirs and not theirs around yours.

One more thing Fred,
I believe you get the chance to pick where you want to go, but like the feds, they can put you anywhere. When I was processing, they said there was a waiting list of 5 years for people to get troop A which I think is the Buffalo area because they had so many guys from there that they all wanted to get back. I don't know how they do it now, but I also heard that if your rank in the top of your class you have a better chance of choosing where you go. If I remember, they give you a top 3 list to pick from, but again it is based on their needs.
