Not a big deal but I was curious about a couple things regarding the written test for NH State Police and the NHSP in general. What is proper attire, dockers and a collared shirt and then bring running clothes? Also, to shave or not to shave the goatee? For an oral I would lose the facial hair, does it really matter at this point (ie. the written test phase) Also, does anyone have an idea as to the potential for overtime/details in NH? Do new troopers usually buy after their first year(after their probabation period)? Finally, it is my understanding that NH does a 6 on 3 off schedule, I assume then that you would get some Fridays and Saturdays off, is this accurate? I would also be curious if anyone had any additional info/experience with the NHSP. Thanks in advance, have a nice weekend.

Thanks DoubleTap.40
I have done a little research and I agree - they seem like a pretty sharp outfit. There are some downsides such as:
1. They are hiring mostly for the Canadian border which does not appeal to me or my fiancee
2. The first year is spent rotating barracks (at least two but more likely three barracks)...another tough pill to swallow after spending significant time away from home during basic
3. The pay and earning potential (overtime opportunity is the one thing that I couldn't get a straight answer on)

There are some mitigating aspects to these downsides such as; lower cost of living, being part of a great outfit, working with great people and the opportunity to live the dream. I am on the fence as to whether the negatives outweigh the positives at this point in time. I still have a couple of irons in the fire in FLE. I am sure that things will work out for a reason. Good luck in your endeavors DoubleTap.40 and thanks for your reply!

Unfortunately/fortunately, depending on how you look at it, the majority of my contacts are in corporate america/financial world, however that does not do a whole hell of a lot of good for me in this particular endeavor. In fact as you can probably imagine, most of them think that I'm crazy for wanting to pursue LE. It's funny, sometimes I have trouble justifying it myself, however as a buddy of mine in the BP pointed out, "its all about living the dream". I think I'm a classic example of the "you can take the kid outta the city but you can't take the city out of the kid". Good luck with the electric blues (if I remember correctly you were in their process). I will definately sit for their next exam, however, as things look right now there may not be another one until 2010...BTW - the Eagles almost pulled out a huge one last weekend.

good luck stubrie
I'm sure that you'll know the right decision, although it would be pretty tough to turn down an offer by MSP at least while you are in limbo with FLE...You are right that the SP training, especially the headgames, would be a pain in the neck, however part of me would like to experience the tough conditions. Good luck and Let's go Pats!

Part of being a trooper is the amount of s**t you have to endure in boot camp. That is true in MA, NH, or any of the other new England states

Now, I would forgo NHSP for MSP anyday. There is so much OT for MSP their road guys are getting ordered over all of the time, and that does not include details.

Now, if you want to be a trooper bad enough, you should take the NHSP job. They are squared away. In MA, you will likely be stationed out west on the NY/MA/CT/VT borders for your first several years anyway.

Good luck.

You are absolutely right about MA over NH. The good thing about being stationed in the western part of the state is the cost of living out there, particularly the housing prices. Thanks for your feedback mikemac64.
