I love this forum. You guys always give great information and advice. I'm hoping you can help me with this.

Here's my situation. I am 29 yrs old. Will be 30 in Feb. I have a bachelor's dgree in communications that I earned 7 yrs ago. I'm married with two small children. Right now I am staying home to take care of them while my wife works as a self-employed contractor with the Navy. I'm getting very restless though and want to get back in to the work force soon. However, around here there isn't much for me to do in my line of work. I have a background in journalism and print communications. I have begun doing some research in to the Air Force OTS. I am very interested in AF OTS and do work as a Public Affiars officer upon earning a commission.

Can someone clue me in on what to expect? What is the process like applying to OTS? I have NO military experience. Am I too old (I know the deadline age is 35)? I live fairly close to Langley AFB. Is it possible to have some kind of input on where you would like to be stationed upon earning a commission or do they put you where they need you? This is important to me b/c my wife has a pretty good job here in a specialized area and would have trouble finding similar work in other areas. My reseach in to this is stil in its infancy stage and I thought I would bounce some ideas off you guys. Please fill me in on any and all information I may need. Give me some pros and cons when considering my age, family situation, area of concentration, etc. In other words, TALK ME OUT OF IT!!! :)

According to the AF OTS website, you must be accepted to OTS by the time you are 35. I think 27 is the cut-off for just being enlisted. I could be wrong.

If you don't want to move, then forget about it. The Air Force needs come before your wife's good job with the Navy. You will most certainly be put where you don't want to be right off the bat, with a couple of exceptions. You probably will not get to Langley and even if you did, you will not be there for more than 3 years as an officer. Sorry to tell you the news but that is the way of the military.

You might want to consider the Air Guard. You wont have to move and in many cases you can work as much as you want to above the required minimum.

Hope this was helpful....
