Police Arrest Pair After They Asked For Directions

DUMMERSTON, Vt. (AP) Two Connecticut men were arrested by the Vermont State Police after they pulled over on Interstate 91 to ask a trooper for directions.

Police say the driver of the car seeking directions, Herbert Pearson, 72, of New Haven, was intoxicated and his son, 39-year-old Brian Pearson was wanted in Connecticut on felony drug charges.

The incident began on Thursday when Trooper Mike Sorensen had another vehicle stopped for speeding.

Herbert Pearson pulled his car in front of the vehicle that had been speeding. When Sorensen finished with the speeder he went up Pearson's car and determined Pearson was intoxicated.

Police said the two told Sorensen that they were lost and were trying to get to Waterbury, Conn., from their home in New Haven, Conn., more than 100 miles from where they were in Dummerston.

Both had been drinking and the driver, Herbert Pearson, registered a .16 percent blood alcohol level, twice the legal limit for driving, police said. When he was questioned, Brian Pearson gave a false name and a Sept. 31 birthday, a date that does not exist.

Sorensen determined that he was Brian Pearson, the driver's son, and that he was wanted in Connecticut for felony possession of narcotics and resisting arrest, police said.

Brian Pearson was later ordered held on $75,000 bail pending a court appearance.

I guess they wanted to go the scenic route, 100 miles away!
