View Full Version : mass state police.....
so, it sounds like there will be an exam coming up soon for the MSP. Jane Swifts speech was pretty good, especially when she said that the MSP will be hiring and training 150 new troopers. I just wanted to hear what some of your reactions are, and how many people you think will be taking the exam this year?

I heard they haven't given at test since 1998. Let me know if you hear of an offical test date. Thanks
Don't hold your breath. At the soonest, they will test in the spring. They may even take guys from the old list even though it's years old. They have done it before
Just curious, but what is so damn special about MSP? PAY, WHAT? Is it a “Cop friendly State”? I keep abreast on every State Patrol/ Police agency in the country (some more than others) and Mass really doesn’t stand out as being so special. The only thing I can assume is it is a political friendly State for cops. Which makes being a state trooper like being a god or something? :huh?:
Sorry Guys, The governor said today they will be using the old test, just like I thought.
Gar, don't get me started. I have been asking my self this question for a long time. It's fun to watch them strut around like peacocks though. There legends in their own mind.

I've heard from a couple Boston cops I've talked with over the summer that a lot of places in Mass. are really tough to get into. They also have told me that Mass. State Police really likes veterans and locals. I'm still going to put my app. in and give it a shot, but being an out-of-stater who chose college over military I'm going to have a big up hill battle. It's not one of my top agencies I would like to work for but definatly one of interest. Another thing that is a down about it is you don't get a wish list upon graduation of what Troop you want to work out of. I'm going to be going on a ride along with a Trooper soon so hopefully I can get some more info and some advice for the application process.
I too am a big follower into SP agencies and don't see what the hype is about MSP. Personally I think the winter uniforms of the knee high boots and bus driver hats are just ugly. :)

Hold on fella's....
MSP is a tough job to get, just like any other cop job in MA. They do however have a test, from which they establish a list. Then, when they get a number to hire, the call from the list, in order.
If you tie with someone, t hey may take a guy with say, a law degree over a plumber. But if I have a 90, and you have an 89...guess who gets the job.
I know locals who have been passed over, and non cops with no college who have gotten the job. They are pretty fair in who they hire. There is politics like every agency, but for the most part, they go by test score and background.
Now, on the last test they did give veterans 2 points on the final score of qualified veterans. But tere is no racial or gender preferences.
I do know they have started and began updating backgrounds from this last test. So all those guys who are sitting in 90 and below land, you may have a shot.
And, for the record. MSP, like any other department has jackasses and real squared away guys.
Did you know that they are the oldest State Police Agency in the united States? This may be why they are so close knit with each other. They have been arond the longest!

Actually the Pennsylvania State Police is the oldest in the nation. It turns 100 in 2005 and was the first ever accrediated state police agency!
Our Probation department is also the first in the country- Thanks to John Augustus
CustomsCop is right the Pennsylvania State Police is the oldest uniformed state police agency.

I know they sent out packets to people with a score of 87. Did they go further than that? Just curious.

i was just doing a search and i saw this, but i thought the texas rangers were the oldest state police agency, i know connecticut is older than penn. since they were established in 1903, and are celebrating their hundred years in a couple months.
just a thought, no one has to reply
