I was at the range the other day and the range attendant was telling me that Glock is now making available pistols with an external safety to satisfy the needs of police/sheriff dept's that WANT to go with Glock's, but whose regulations require them to have an external safety on their service weapons.

He also said that it is possible to have your current civilian Glock retrofitted with the external safety if you so choose...

Our range master always taught that every Glock has an external safety. That being keeping your finger off the trigger. Might be a wise-guy response, but true nevertheless.

It's true Glock is making them... I saw on the internet a picture of a G17 with an external safety (just google "glock external safety" and check out the glock FAQ link. Pictures of it are up on that website.

That being said, I don't think the external safety fits with the "glock" style. Like Kegan said... you want a safety? Keep your finger off the trigger. It's not going to fire unless your finger is on the trigger (trust me, I once dropped a loaded G19 and it didn't fire... needless to say, I almost had to do some laundry if you catch my drift!).

I don't recall there ever being a big drive to put safetys on double-action revolvers; Glocks don't need them for the same reason.

Thats a good point. Any AD's that happen are the fault of the user.

I was a little uncomfortable when I bought my glock because I was so used to having a safety, but quickly got used to it. Truth be told I think safeties may cause bad habits and reliance on a switch that may be off when you think its on.

Your finger is never wrong if you keep it off the trigger until you intend to use it.

I love my Glocks and Sigs for that reason. No switch to fumble around with. When my fingers is outside the trigger guard, the safety is engaged. Freaks out a lot of guys I know who aren't used to it, but it makes total sense to me.
