Looking for agencies that have external shirt-pocket type vest carriers, or other types of external carriers, for uniform patrol. Anyone know some agencies, other than Alaska State Troopers, that use them?

My thinking: load bearing suspenders attached to the police belt worn UNDER an external carrier are less of a safety hazard for the officer and probably better looking, too.

Border Patrol had agents using external carriers they'd had made out of old uniform shirts, although I don't recall whether it was officially authorized or not. Incidentally, I never actually saw an Alaska State Trooper using an external carrier, but it was commonplace on Anchorage PD.

Can't comment on the carrier issue, our uniform people wear concealable or nothing. However, I saw an article recently that mentioned Uncle Mikes was making some "officer safe" break-away load bearing suspenders. I don't know how that could possibly work, but it might be worth looking at for you. Our management does not support the anti-back pain revolution, so we are not permitted to wear suspenders, I just came upon the article while looking at something else.

I saw some Cook County, IL deputies at a Motely Crue concert in 2005 (what can I say? I'm a 16 year-old in a 40-year-old body :)) and they had some external carriers of this type.

Also, I know that NOAA's Enforcement Officers in Alaska had some kind of carrier like you described made locally in Kodiak, AK. I know because I HAVE one, and other than having to use it once for traction (under my tire) to get un-stuck in some deep snow last winter, it's in good condition. Yours if you want it (to take it to a seamstress, for the pattern, whatever). Just PM me with a mailing address.

Minneapolis PD wears 'em, they're a darker blue than their uniform, but I've seen more and more of their cops wearing them.

Actually, Phoenix, Chandler and Gilbert where a black nylon outer carrier. Mesa PD just approved the outer carrier with the shirt pockets and fake buttons.

Anybody got a picture or a web link of what exactly you're talking about? I'd be interested to get a visual here.

I nearby department wears them and they look pretty good. The cops I spoke with said they were a lot more comfortable then the normal internal vests. I could barely tell that they were wearing it, blended in perfectly with the shirt.

US Coast Guard Military Police in Kodiak Alaska wear those, and if memory serves me correct I think the local Kodiak Police wear them also.
