Deputy Sheriff Steven R. Ziegler of the St. Francois County, Missouri Sheriff's Department, died as a result of injuries sustained in an on-duty traffic accident on Sunday, September 29, 2001. Deputy Ziegler, 32, an 8 year veteran, is survived by his wife and four young children.
All visitation and memorial services will be held at the Boyer's Funeral Home, 1116 Desloge Dr., in Desloge, MO. Family visitation will be Tuesday, 10/2/01 from 1500-1630 hours. Public visitation will be from 1630-2100 hours and on Wednesday 10/3/01 from 0900-1100 hours. A Department Memorial will be held following Wednesday's visitation. Funeral service will be at the East Bonne Terre Baptist Church, 2412 Hwy K in Bonne Terre, MO., on Wednesday, 10/3/01 at 1300 hours. Deputy Ziegler will be laid to rest at Bonne Terre Cemetery following the service.
Steve was (is) one of the nicest and most honest officers I ever met...he will be missed.
This accident occurred as Deputy Ziegler was southbound on US Hwy 67, and his vehicle was struck head on by a trailer that had come loose from a northbound vehicle and crossed the median.
