View Full Version : Plain clothes boots?
I did a search and found threads concerning the academy, tactical and duty wear but does anyone have plain clothes recommendations? I noticed plainclothes LEO's wearing Timberlands, Dr. Martens and Red Wings but thought I'd get the valued opinions of the board. Basically, I am looking for something that is comfortable and doesn't scream cop.
Thanks

Wear whatever is comfortable.....I went through a pair of Timberlands (not boots)....then remembered that I had a pair of nice Docs that I had hardly worn. They don't make Docs like they use to, so these were a great find. Next I think it'll be a pair of Redwing 875 boots, only because I haven't been able to find a pair of more LE type boots like fit me well.
In short, it doesn't matter (unless you're agency/department has some kind of reg) what you wear. Make sure it'll last and is comfortable.
Depends on where you'll be wearing them, to some extent. I have some Merrells that I wear pretty much all the time, both in pavement and off. Also some heavier Vasque boots for backcountry stuff.
Danner makes a lot more stuff than just it's LE line. I have some brown danner Sequoias (I think) which are great. Whatever you choose, make sure it's waterproof.

I prefer Merrells for normal everyday wear and Danner Acadias for the winter.

Keen Footwear! Uglier than all get out but the most comfortable shoes that you will ever put on your feet.

+1 on the Keens. I own about 6 different pair and if I plan to do a lot of walking, I'm wearing Keens.

I'm partial to Timberland and Dockers boots. Comfortble and good quality. I have seen some where the low black hi-tec's but that often screams cop.
I guess it depends on the type of terrain and how often you'll be in the elements.

Exactly. That's the great thing about plainclothes.

I love Montrails for a more cross over hiking boot/shoe...but found that they (and other styles like those...) look a bit too casual for my liking on a day to day basis.

It's funny in my neck of the woods the classic Timberland boot or "work boot" is worn by almost every single drug cop that I have come in contact with or work closely with. I tease them when they all end up in the same room but they all admit they never even paid any attention to it. It is kind of like the fanny packs:D
I digress. I second the wear what's comfortable. I swap between sneakers (I am usually the "go fetch" officer :D which I enjoy---I know there is no ankle support but...) and a pair of brown Sketcher's. I also have a pair of the 5.11 HRT boots that I love.
I wear plain clothes to work but there is usually a tac vest on- we don't really do the traditional plain clothes/ don't be made as a cop type of work much.

Gonzo, You are up on me by one pair! I used to be all about Merrell boots but I have a pair of Keen hikers that after a year and a half of regular hard use, the footbeds still haven't broken down. I have never had a pair of hikers hold up so well. I am going to email Keen Footwear and ask them to develop a line of tactical footwear with some black boots that could be worn with a uniform!

I have had Danner Explorers for 5 years and could not be happier.
