My department finally invested in these excellent little toys and we had our training today. I got some great footage but I have to say, that is the longest and most painful 5 seconds of my life. I can't even begin to describe the pain nor the feeling of it. Glad I did it because now I know just how great a tool these things are on the streets. Let me hear some of your stories about "riding the bull" as our instructor called it (taking the full shot 5 second burst).

You're brave for doing the full 5 seconds, I only did about 2-3 seconds and it was the longest seconds in my life. The first words out of my mouth when it was over were HOLY S%$T! I get to look forward to doing it again at the academy.

Ah yes, I seem to recall thinking (WRONGLY!) that I could just mentally block the pain and have no problems. I think about 2 seconds in I was pretty sure the Taser had malfunctioned because it felt like 15 at that point already, and by the 5th second, I was convinced that the instructor had just repeatedly pulled the trigger for a minute or two. On the plus side, when it's over, it's over. I'd take a full 5 second ride on the lightning any day over a shot in the face with the OC spray.

no pantalones-yeah i found out we get gassed/oc'd first then tased after that.... that day may suck.

I took a tasing for the full 5 and all I remember is the stream of f'n heimers that flew and didn't stop for a good 10 seconds after more fun to be holding than the gun but I agree with Jedi, I'll take the lightning over OC any day.

OC for me before the 5 second ride. I will never volunteer for that ride again.

Where is the video? Would love to see how you braved the bull ride. I have yet to have that opportunity but it is coming soon.

Thanks

If you guys want to see my video, I will post it somewhere. Problem is I am not to computer savy and don't know the first thing of posting a video. I really don't want it on you tube either. Any suggestions.

You Tube may give you this option as well, but I have never posted anything there, so can't verify....

If you have a MySpace account, you can upload the video to your account and just set it to private. That way it doesn't come up in any key word searches, and even people who click on the "video" link on your profile page can't see the video. Only person who can find it is you. Then you just send the link out via email or whatever (to control who actually gets it), and people can watch. Just be advised that those folks can forward that link and anybody who gets the direct link can view.

If you see that your "times watched" counter is getting up into the thousands, you may decide it's time to take it down. lol

Can someone please explain to me the purpose of being shot with the taser as part of taser training? In my dept only sgt's and emergency service unit officers carry tasers, so i'm not sure what the requirements are for them in regards to certification to use them. The OC spray is understandable since we have all experienced the second hand effects when we or another officer sprays a perp. But what are the chances, honestly, of a perp using your own taser against you or having one of his own and shooting you with it? The way I see it you might as well shoot me with my gun in order for me to be "certified" to carry it. Just seems kind of ridiculous...

I am by no means an expert on the topic, but I'm pretty sure one of the reasons why officers are shot with the taser prior to carrying it is to instill in them the idea that they really work. I think it provides the officers with a greater peace of mind that the tool will work, as they experienced its effectiveness first hand.
Just my two cents and one logical purpose behind exposing officers to the Taser.

You do not have to be shot with a taser to be qualified. You may have to be depending on your agency. I carry one, and was not shot. Pretty sure I know what would happen if I did get shot. Pain and immeadiate muscle failure.

As said above, getting shot is not a requirement to be qualified. They explained to us that it was voluntary, and MIGHT end up helping one day should a defense attorney ever attack us for tasing his client, so we could say yes it's happened to me, and no I didn't die or need medical attention afterwards, etc etc.

Oh, and for what it's worth, a classmate of mine was one on one against a guy who was much bigger than him. What SHOULD have been a small situation went south very quickly and the suspect jumped bad and yes, took his Taser away from him. My classmate was smart enough to protect his pistol, which meant leaving the Taser open. Fortunately, the damn thing misfired, and the fool ran off, to be rounded up nearby by officers who had been converging on the site.
