FORT DIX, N.J. (AP) -- An Army police reservist who was being relieved of duty grabbed a rifle from a soldier escorting him to clean out his locker and shot the officer Friday, authorities said.
The reservist then wounded another military police officer, fled the base and shot two local police officers before police killed him, authorities said.
The reservist had been told this week he would be relieved of duty pending a psychological evaluation, base spokesman Kryn Westhoven said.
After shooting the two officers and stealing a rifle and a 9-mm service pistol from them, the reservist fled in a Department of Defense police cruiser, Westhoven said.
The base used ground and air surveillance to track him, but he was able to escape. ``We initially thought we had him closed in,'' Westhoven said.
During a chase, the reservist ambushed two Chesterfield, N.J., police officers, shot one of them and took their car, said Sgt. Al Della Fave, a state police spokesman.
Other police and the reservist exchanged fire at a shopping center in Chesterfield, about 10 miles from Fort Dix. The gunman was killed, and a Mansfield, N.J., police officer was shot, Della Fave said.
The reservist briefly took a hostage, but the man was able to break away when the gunman's weapon jammed.
``All of the sudden we heard semiautomatic rifle fire, and then there must have been about 45 or 50 cop cars and a helicopter,'' said Joan Hullings, an employee of a sandwich shop in the shopping center.
Westhoven said the gunman was a member of the 307th military police unit. He was from Pennsylvania, but his name was not released.
The two soldiers were hospitalized with injuries that were not believed to be life threatening, Westhoven said. They were identified as Master Sgt. Anthony Young of Wyncote, Pa., and Sgt. First Class Patrick Witcup, of New Kensington, Pa.
Chesterfield police officer Kyle Wilson was in good condition, and Mansfield police officer William Kerr was in stable condition, authorities said.
Fort Dix specializes in training and mobilizing reserves and the National Guard.
Troops have recently been called up to the base as part of President Bush's homeland defense initiative.
