About five years ago, I joined my local police depts volunteer force. Part of the little academy they throw is that you have to do a ride along with an officer. About two hours into the ride along, the officer was dispatched to an MVA. When we arrive on scene, we observed a car that had crashed through the front door of a house. The driver was still in the frount seat seat belted in. He had a pretty nasty cut to the fore head. There was seven beer cans on the floor board ofhis car. After his came out of his vehicle, the officer questioned him. He tried to blame the whole accident on his wife, who was at home asleep. When questioned about the fact that there was no wife present, the drunk claimed that she had taken off right after the accident. When asked why he was in the drivers seat, with the seat belt on, he said that he slid over during the accident. The drunk was arrested and taken in.
Aren't Drunk Drivers great. Just had one last night come down my block and total 3 cars (1 being my friends that left the vehicle here to take a cab because he had a few in him, and the others being neighbors cars). It was about 3:30am and sounded like a bomb, I ran out already with 911 dialed got about 20 feet from the car and the drunk slumped over in the truck, sits back up and revs the engine and start to take off. I did everything I could (I was in a t-shirt and short, no shoes with a cordless phone), trying to stop the vehicle was out of the question so I just chased the vehicle trying to get the license (no contact in either). Unfortunately he was heading towards one of the largest roads in Philly (Roosevelt Blvd). Luckily we live right down the street from 2 district stations in Philly (2nd & 15th) and a 2nd distrit officer was pulling up, I told dispatch that and the Officer pursued. The guy didn't make it that far. He tried to cross the Blvd. (12 lanes separated by grass/concrete medians 3-3-3-3) hit the first median, hit the second and a pole and blew out 3 tires....there was off duy cop sitting at that stop light....
Damage done total: roughly $18,000.
Fun Night.
My favorite was the one we chased for 30 some miles on back roads and then back onto a hard surfaced highway where he lost it, rolling his vehicle 4-5 times and throwing him out. We found him on the ground about 20 yards from his vehicle, unconscious. After a few minutes he wakes up, sits up and looks at his vehilce, which is now completely engulfed in flames. The first words out of his mouth were, “I wasn’t driving”. Course, we had known from following him, he was the only person in the vehicle. Another case of illegal drug use, mixed with an alcoholic beverage.
